Year Prep and Year 5/6

This week the Year Prep and Year 5/6 students enjoyed some buddy time together during Maths on Tuesday. The Grade 5/6s assisted the Prep students in completing some work on the chromebooks, before playing some Counting games together online. The Prep students absolutely loved this time and have already asked to do Maths again with their buddies!

Year 1

Over the past couple of weeks during our Inquiry and Discovery sessions the Year 1’s have been learning and exploring all things to do with water…floating and sinking, melting and freezing, water displacement and evaporation. The Year 1’s have had the opportunity to be scientists and take part in many experiments. The experiments have included ‘frozen hands’, making and eating frozen ice cubes and even an evaporation experiment with covered and uncovered jars. The Year 1's have shown great enthusiasm for predicting, exploring and experimenting which is wonderful to see.

Year 2

Auslan in Grade 2!

Happy Birthday

The Year 2s and Bethany, have been learning various Auslan signs from Erin. They have been learning how to sign different greetings, some familiar words and the colours of the rainbow. Today Erin taught them how to sign the ‘Happy Birthday’ song. The class then sang and signed the song to Katalina as she is celebrating her very special 8th birthday today. Below you will see the three signs… why not have a go?

Our trip to the Library

After having time in the Library to look at and read numerous books, the Year 2 students listened to a wonderful story called ‘Parachute’ by Danny Parker, chosen by Kaitlyn. While Bethany read the story, Erin sat beside her and translated the whole story to the class using sign language. The students learnt the sign for Parachute.

Year 2/3/4

Our Trip Around the Sun

After exploring different sources such as books, videos and the internet, the students were exposed to a demonstration which they named ‘The Black Hole’. Here, they were able to further investigate and increase their knowledge of how the Earth rotates around the Sun. We used a globe and a torch to show the Earth’s rotation and its orbit around the Sun and to investigate the link between the position of the Earth and the seasons. We even began to explore the concept of Gravity. The students are eager to now start their own investigation on their chosen topic.

Year 4/5

Sacrament of Eucharist Preparation

For the past three weeks we have been learning about the importance of the Sacrament of Eucharist as we prepare for this important event, the second Sacrament of Initiation in the Catholic Church. Please pray for us as we continue to learn about receiving Jesus in the Eucharist.

The Great Barrier Reef  By Caitlin

Introduction

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef on the earth and is  home to many living sea creatures. The Great Barrier Reef is located on the northeastern coast of Australia.

Facts

The Great Barrier was found on the 11th of June 1770 and Captain James Cook was the one to discover it!

The Great Barrier Reef is the biggest coral reef in the world and is made with over 3000 coral reefs. It also has hundreds of living creatures living in it such as Clownfish, Mantis Shrimp and more!

Coral has been growing on the Great Barrier reef for over 25 million years! But within the past 30 years we’ve lost more than half of the coral cover.

In 2016 there was sea warming around the Great Barrier Reef, and due to the sea warming two-thirds of the coral was killed in nine months.

Concluding Statement

The Great Barrier Reef is the biggest coral reef in the world and is made of over 3000 coral reefs and has over 2500 living sea creatures. The Great Barrier Reef  By Isabelle

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef in the world, and is home to more than 1500 species of fish and 300 types of coral.

How is it formed? It is formed by millions of tiny coral scallions. There is also living coral there too and when it dies it adds to the structure of the reef.

The Great Barrier Reef is located in the north east coast of Queensland, found by Captain James Cook in 1770. The Great Barrier Reef is 2,300 km long and the depth of 60 to 80m is the size of 70 million football fields!! You can even see the coral reef from space. Many people think the reef is one big coral reef but it is actually around 3000 reefs in one. Did you know that the reef makes up 10% of the world's coral reefs?

In conclusion, The Great Barrier Reef is the biggest reef in the world. It's located in Queensland and is built up more and more every day. I hope I have extended your knowledge on The Great Barrier Reef.

LIBRARY NEWS THIS WEEK

Well our visitors to the Library today were all keen to choose another couple of books to keep them going through to next week, when they can swap them over for another book or two of choice! It's so good to hear and see their excitement as they check out their books of choice for the coming week, to know they will be spending good quality time absorbed in the enjoyment of reading.

In the coming weeks I hope to have some new Easter books in the Library after I do some purchasing today. That might bring some smiles to faces!

In between seasonal displays in the Library sometimes other 'novel' displays pop up for the students interest. The latest one has been a 'Koala Display' with some accompanying information on the life and habits of the Koala, our very cute and furry native friend. Our Library is here to inspire interest and reading in various topics and subjects for our students in many ways!

Our parent helper Cettina, mum of Prep student Joseph, has worked wonders in the Library today! Cettina worked on the two revolving shelves of fictional books, sorting them into groups of books where appropriate, and therefore making it so much easier for our children to find books in the same series or by the same authors when they go searching for favourite reads to borrow! A slow and tedious job, Cettina quietly worked through the enormous number of books contained on those two stands to make them a much easier place for the children to locate favourite reads! Thank you so much Cettina for your patience and perseverance!

Have a great week everyone!
