Cooking with Fractions

Can students apply their fractions and approximation knowledge to calculate the correct ingredients for different recipes? This is what we’re doing in Year 9 Foundation Maths.

Food preparation is an opportunity to apply mathematics concepts to real-life situations. Math in the kitchen is a necessity when it comes to measuring, dividing, multiplying and following instructions.

Recipes with fractions are great for any student learning this important math skill. Cooking helps teach students practical applications for math, and will help them attain fluency with fractions. Not only that, but cooking is fun! 

 

This is the recipe we followed in class:

 

Chocolate Chip Cookies

 

 

 

This recipe makes approximately 14 cookies. Why not double the recipe and have your child do the maths.
