Debating

Round 2

There were four teams that represented our Mentone campus in the second round of the DAV debating results as follows:

A grade: Represented by Hunter Trumble (our debating captain), Justin Hii and Sean Courtier, they won by one point in a closely contested debate. Congratulations to Justin for competing in his first debate as part of the DAV (although he brought an absolute wealth of knowledge with him from his experience debating in Malaysia), he also was declared Best Speaker in the debate.

*B grade – win by forfeit, well done to Austin Warfe, Dylan Collins, Nathan Murphy and Josh Gould (and their mentor Gabi Warfe) for their efforts in preparing the case that they didn’t have the opportunity to present.

C grade: Incredibly closely contested by Tom Gregory, Liam Casey and Rory Tuke – they were defeated by 1 point. They are to be commended on preparing a sound, well considered case where they showed huge improvement since even the last round.

D grade team 1: Represented by Jasper Frith, John Carino and Harry McCawley – they were defeated by 1 point. This was an impressive display by this team as Jasper stepped in to fill a spot at the last minute and their case was extremely well researched and presented.

D grade team 2: Represented by Matt Donnelly of Year 8 and Ben Hall and Tommy James in Year 9. They lost to Brighton Grammar by 2 points, but a close competition overall. Special mention to Matt for stepping in late as well, he did an excellent job delivering his first formal debate.

Special thanks to Kaylene Menara and Carl De Souza for mentoring teams that competed last night, and huge thanks to Deb Frizza for being a special guest in the audience for our A-graders – wonderful to have you along Deb!

A mixed bag of results overall but I hope you’ll all join me in being incredibly proud of the efforts of each of these students, they’ve all developed in leaps and bounds since last year. Onwards and upwards to rounds 3-5 in term two, and thank you to all staff in encouraging students in their endeavours in debating.
