Senior School - Year 10 to 12

Year 10 Subject Selections Update

This week, Year 10 students were emailed an individual code which allowed them to begin the process of entering in their Year 11 subjects either for VCE or VCAL in 2021. These instructions have been posted as a Learning Task on all students’ COMPASS accounts titled “2021 Courses”.

Please bear in mind that all VCAL and VCE subjects are year-long courses. There are no semester based subjects like there are in Year 10, so for students choosing their subjects, the Senior School expects that students will remain in this subject until the end of 2021.

There are website links that provide valuable information when discussing subjects and pathways which students have already been made aware of through the DiSCovery lesson plans.

I would encourage students to have a look at these websites as well and look at particular tertiary education courses which are of particular interest in order to ascertain what is needed to fulfil the requirements of that course.

Later this term the Senior School will offer course counselling to students in which their subject selections will be discussed and finalised. This will be a last opportunity for students to consider their choices and make any necessary adjustments before we move forward.

This is an important time for Year 10 students. Parents, please take time to discuss subject choices with your child. Year 11 subjects provide valuable knowledge and skills that will prepare students for independence and life beyond high school.

Although these choices may seem like a burden on students' shoulders at this challenging time, they should be seen as an opportunity that is placed in their hands.

On behalf of the Senior School, we look forward to continuing our journey with our Year 10s and supporting them to the best of our ability.

If you have any questions or concerns moving forward, please contact the Year 10 Coordinators Asli Dulger and Jonathan Tennent.

Stay safe and take care,

Year 12 Careers Expo Wrap Up!

Last week the annual Year 12 Careers Expo day was held, with the Year 12 students attending a range of engaging and informative sessions.

The day started with keynote speaker Rueben Tee (former DSC student and Dux), who shared his thoughts on five key points:

  • Why – do we do what we do?
  • Feel – be empathetic and think about how you can make a difference
  • Plan – be intentional in what you do eg: volunteering, internships, travel, your use of time.
  • Connections – value and honour the people you interact with
  • Truth – can be scary, but we need to be honest and true to ourselves and others.

He also shared experiences from Year 12 and university (he is currently studying Medicine at the University of Melbourne and has placements at the Alfred Hospital).  The students then attended three sessions as detailed below.

Period 1

Mrs Ramsay gave general information on universities (costs, supports and pathways), TAFE (vocational options) and apprenticeships/traineeships.

Period 2

Students accessed the Careers Department website to complete an individual profile and explore industry information. They also accessed course guide information.

Period 3

Representatives presented online from ACU, Deakin, La Trobe, RMIT, Swinburne, Monash, University of Melbourne and MAS Experience (an apprenticeship centre).

The day finished with a fish and chip lunch provided by the school, which was enjoyed in the sun, with a spike ball tournament as great entertainment.

Thank you to Mrs Ramsay for the work she did in preparing the three sessions, to Mr Vlahos and Mr Fryar for the entertaining spike ball tournament, and to Nick from Doncaster East Fish and Chippery for the delicious lunch.

Back to remote learning: 'You've got this!'

As we transition back to remote learning for all Senior students, I would like to remind everyone that it is going to be okay. We've done it before, and we did it well. With everything we've learned, we will do it better this time.

I'd like to share some practical advice for maximising your productivity while working from home:

  1. Routine is key. Wake up at the same time each day, allowing enough time to get prepared for the day.
  2. Location matters. Studying in bed doesn't produce the same level of work as working at a desk.
  3. Movement is important. Taking a short walk between classes will help reset your focus and allow you to re-energise.

Your DiSCovery teacher will check in with you regularly, but please reach out to them if you have any issues.

We'll see you on the other side. Stay home and stay safe.

Mr Ty Dennis

Head of Senior School
