All Schools Cross Country Relays

On Saturday the 21st of May at Jells Park, Vermont was represented by 20 of our finest Cross-Country runners at the Victorian All Schools Cross Country Relay Championships. This competition is separate to our normal government schools competition. The competition includes all runners from all schools around the state, so our runners are up against the finest athletes that the state has to offer. This event requires each student to run an individual leg of a 3 to 4-kilometre circuit and then tag the person next in line.

The sun was shining on a cool May morning, and the runners were ready and raring to go thanks to Brooke and Robbie P’s dad who took charge of warmup duties, and also parted some racing wisdom. It was a day filled with excitement and was an absolute pleasure to witness the camaraderie amongst the students and families cheering our runners.

Results from the day:

Under 14 boys, 4x3km – Oliver S, Harrison R, James G & Ephraim M placed 7th

Under 16 girls, 4x3km – Taya C, Chloe C, Ella I & Leana B placed 20th

Under 16 boys, 4x3km – Finn M, Robbie P, Lachlan H & Will G placed 5th

Under 18 girls, 4x4km – Maddie H, Amelia R, Mackenzie E & Brooke P placed 14th

Under 18 boys, 4x4km – Matt V, Isaac M, Adam B & Harun A placed 3rd earning a bronze medal

Well done to all involved, and good luck to all in the upcoming SSV Region Cross Country event on June of 14th.

Ms Malander

State Bowls

It was an early morning departure for our Year 9 students who were competing in the SSV State Finals for Lawn Bowls played at Sunbury Bowls Club on Thursday the 5th of May. Lucas H, Austin L, Kai T, & Oliver W (emergency) showed an unbelievable level of commitment to prepare for this occasion, with all students only having played the sport for less than a month.

The State Finals presented this group of students with an opportunity to compete against other students around Victoria who had many more years of experience under their belts. In our first round robin match against Echuca College (eventual State winners for 2022), we remained competitive throughout, only going down by 5 shots. Our students bounced back in the next match, comprehensively beating Alamanda College by 12 shots. The level of skill and teamwork displayed by our students did not go unnoticed, with a State coach expressing many positive remarks throughout the day.

In our final round robin match against FCJ Benalla, we unfortunately could not hold onto a 7-0 lead and ended up losing on the final end, therefore, being eliminated from the competition. Overall, Mr. Coles (Director of Coles Bowls Academy) was extremely impressed and proud of our students throughout their campaign and look forward to seeing what this group of Lawn Bowlers can achieve in the years to come!

EMR Senior Boys/Mixed Baseball

The Senior Baseball Team came into the EMR finals full of confidence having played together for many years prior. With the bats alive and some impressive fielding, Vermont SC got off to a great start with a solid win in our first game. Unfortunately, this winning streak did not last long as we were beaten by John Monash Science School with their pitcher throwing absolute fireballs! From this point forward, we were hopeful of results going our way, although this was not the case. Regardless of the result, our students were competitive throughout the day and all played an important role whether that be in the field or with the bat. It will be one final chance in 2023 for this group to progress one step further and make the State Finals again.

SENIOR ROUND ROBIN

Senior Badminton

The Senior Badminton Team had a tough but enjoyable out at the Kilsyth Badminton Centre. Despite the best efforts of all our badminton players the competition from Glen Waverley and Mount Waverley in particular, was especially tough. Shoutout to our Girls B Team who made the final, but, unfortunately, finished second. Our other teams, put everything out on their courts, and many tight matches took place, but, unfortunately, all finished in a valiant fourth. Most importantly, our Vermont students should be congratulated on their great sportsmanship and attitudes, they were a pleasure to take out!

Senior Boys/Mixed Soccer

Friday 6th of May 2022 – Round Robin

The Senior boys had a successful day at Monash University this year with a great team effort and after only a couple of training sessions earlier that week, managed to play some quality soccer over the 3 matches. 1 WIN and 2 LOSSES don’t tell the whole story and improvement was made each match but they, unfortunately, came up against some tough opposition. The work ethic, teamwork and support of each other was great to see! I was very impressed by their work rate, ability to change the way they were playing as well as their commitment. Congratulations to all!

Senior Girls Soccer

The senior girls had remarkable success at Monash Clayton in the Soccer round robin. With limited time to train, we surrounded our experienced and super talented players Alysha B, Sienna W and Orla F with a bunch of ATHLETES! After a warmup 0-0 draw in our first game to build some team chemistry and learn some tactics, we won our next two games to cement the win and move on to the next round. The skills, enthusiasm and teamwork were outstanding from all involved. Our team played so well that our goalkeeper Ava did not have to make a single save in our last two games and was visibly very bored at times! Congrats team! Pumped for Round 2. Mr B

Senior Boys Football

On Friday the 6th of May the senior boys set off on their football journey. A big squad dominated on the day with a grand total of zero points conceded to the opposition. As the opposition were not strong, an emphasis was on professional conduct and sportsmanship, pleasingly the team achieved this. There were plenty of contributors on the day as many played in all sorts of positions. Thanks to all involved and to Mr. Henderson for assisting the team.

Mr. Billings

Senior Girls Netball

The Senior Girls had a fantastic day out at their Netball round robin at Maroondah Nets.

With limited training and a few last minute team changes we managed to maintain consistency across the day, winning all three games. Firstly, beating Highvale 23-11, then GWSC 28-6, then lastly MWSC 26-11. Our star shooters Sienna, Amber and Madi were highly accurate and worked well together to dominate under the post. Our mid-courters Chloe, Taryn and Morgan were unmatched for leg and ball speed, creating play and feeding our shooters in attack. Summer and Kate provided unrelenting defensive pressure out in front at every opportunity, creating a wealth of intercepts, deflections and turnover ball.

The girls were highly impressive, working together displaying great teamwork and a positive attitude all day. It was a pleasure coaching you all and I look forward to the next round!

INTERMEDIATE ROUND ROBIN

Intermediate Boys/Mixed Soccer

The intermediate boys had a very successful day and were the only team to win a game during the day. The boys trained hard in the lead up to the day and were well coached by the savvy Damanvir S. They finished with 2 wins and a draw and are currently training in preparation for the next round. Well done boys and good luck!

Intermediate Badminton

Vermont SC sent 4 teams of eager Year 9s and 10s off to Kilsyth Badminton Centre to compete against other schools. It was heart-warming to see all students engaging in positive interactions with students from other schools. Well done to all who gave it their all!

Both boys/mixed teams (A and B) came in 4th place. The competition was really tough but that didn’t stop our boys from giving it their best. Despite the not-so-bright prospects ahead of them as they faced more experienced players, there wasn’t a single moment they didn’t face their opponents without a smile on their faces. There were some nail-biting moments and every point gained was celebrated amongst friends.

Both girls teams (A and B) had more success coming in 2nd place! It was a tense final game against Glen Waverley Secondary College. For Team A: in the end, the score was a draw with our girls winning 2 single games and 1 double game. Unfortunately, Glen Waverley scored more points overall and won the final by a small margin. Well done to both teams!

Ms. Liu

Intermediate Boys Football

What a Friday it has been and congratulations to everyone who participated on the ground against other school teams, and commiseration to those who are injured. Thank you to Tom B, for scoring and sorting out the positions, Lucas who helped us and Mr. Smyth & Mr. Leithead for taking us out to compete in the Intermediate AFL. Well done to all who did kick at least a goal in the day (especially me where I kicked one on the run before the Half Time siren against Highvale in our 2nd game!). Congratulations Vermont who made it through to the next stage. We all loved the songs that were played in the bus through a very big speaker to celebrate. Rest up, and I’m looking forward to seeing our team compete in the next level, this time, some tougher opponents! See you all on the 14 of July. GO VERMONT! By Ben L. Year 9

Intermediate Girls Netball

Under the guidance of 2 excellent coaches, Kate M. and Sienna VW, both the A and B teams won every game played during the tournament. We did not start off too well, however, with an ankle injury occurring before we even started the day’s play, and although one player down, the girls soldiered on and proved to be too strong. The sportsmanship towards the opposition and the umpires left no doubt about the calibre of students that belong to VSC. Every member of both teams can be proud of the way they conducted themselves both on and off the court and it is always lovely to see students enjoy the day.

We move on now to the regional finals that will be held on Friday 5th of August at the Waverley Netball Centre. Go the big V!

BOYS NETBALL

Senior Boys

The senior boys completed a perfect sweep of all competition. Under the guidance of Poppy and Andreya, the boys were able to display some beautiful teamwork and discipline on the way to comprehensive victories in all matches. Unfortunately, Hudson went down with an ankle injury early in the day, but we wish him all the best for a quick recovery. Otherwise, highlights included some break-neck transition, some brilliant defending by Tom and Ben, and an audacious alley-oop attempt from Lachy and Fletcher.

A great day had by all and congratulations to all involved. We’re looking forward to fine-tuning some of the game plan for the next round.

Intermediate Boys

An excellent day with Vermont Boys Netball! The Intermediate boys were consistent throughout the day, with both teams winning all matches. Athletic ability, height and versatility were our strengths across the day, with the boys able to adapt their abilities for any position. Thanks to Sienna who coached the B team to great success all day. Well done boys, bring on regionals!

Junior Boys

Congratulations to the A and B Junior Boys Netball who competed in the Division competition at Waverley Netball Centre. Both teams played highly skilled and disciplined netball to easily win all of their matches. The B team won 5/5 games and the A team won 3/3 games.

Our A and B teams are to be commended on their ability to take on feedback and quickly learn and improve, particularly in regard to the more technical rules and strategies. A big “thank you” to Caitlin and Taylor for helping umpire and organise the teams at training and coach the B team on the competition day. We look forward to the A team competing in the Eastern region finals next term.

GIRLS FOOTBALL

Senior Girls

On Tuesday the 24th of May the Senior Girls AFLW team headed off to Springfield Park, Box Hill Nth full of expectation and enthusiasm. With only 18 girls, and therefore no players rotating off the bench, it was always going to be a hard ask.

In game one we played Glen Waverley Secondary College and came out winners 4 goals 4 points = 28 to zip. A great first up win. Unfortunately, during that game one of the girls rolled an ankle, down to 17 players!

Game two saw us play Highvale Secondary College and we were again victorious at 5 goals 10 points = 40 to zero points. Great defense!

Our final game saw us up against the undefeated Mount Waverley Secondary College. In a tough, low scoring game we were down by three points with one and half minutes to go and running up the hill to score. With a fast break on the far side and out wide, followed by three good kicks forward, the team was able to leave the opposition behind and score the winning goal. Final score VSC 2 goals 1 point = 13 to MWSC 1 goal 4 points = 10 points.

Well done to the team on a fantastic day’s play and thank you for the honour of coaching you on the day, Mr Jacobs.

The next round (Eastern Metropolitan Region – EMR) is on Monday 18th July at East Burwood Reserve.

Intermediate Girls

On Tuesday the 24th of May the Intermediate Girls had a great win at Division Footy! The first game against Glen Waverley was a strong victory, winning 47 to 0. Our forward line scored from some fantastic shots at goal. In game two we came up against Highvale. Highvale had some strong competitors, but we managed to pull away with strong contributions from our defense and we ended up winning 48 to 4. In game 3 we played Mount Waverley. After running hard all day the midfielders put in great efforts to win the ball. We won game 3 by 43 points. Overall, it was a great day with huge efforts from the girls all around the ground. Thanks to Mr. Smyth & Mr. Squire for coaching us to Victory leading us through to region finals!

Junior Girls

The junior girls had a fantastic day out at Koonung Reserve. There was an even spread of contributors across all lines, with a special mention to Hannah who was only pulling on the boots for the first time. Her relentless pressure in the forward line resulted in her first goal and  many goals from her teammates!

2 wins early, allowed the team to build up confidence going into our last game against Mount Waverley. The last one was a great test for the girls with the game on the line, Vermont were up by only 3 points with 6 minutes to go.  A goal saving tackle from Abby allowed Leilani to run the ball down the wing, a quick kick into the goal square where Macayla took a strong mark. With seconds to go, she booted a goal sealing the win!
