Student Leadership

Vermont Secondary College

The Student Leadership Team planned and delivered a whole school assembly on May 26th to acknowledge Sorry Day and mark the start of National Reconciliation Week that runs from the 27th of May to 3rd of June. Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories and cultures and look to how everyone has an opportunity to contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

During the assembly School Captains and Hotham House Captains, Mandela and Zac delivered speeches that included an Acknowledgement of Country written with support of a local First Nations Elder, and shared messages communicating the significance of the reconciliation. School Council Student Representative Heide also addressed the school community with a reading of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s official apology first delivered to parliament in 2008. In further recognition of our colleges commitment to embracing diversity and inclusion, School Council Student Representative Tomasz led our House Leaders in raising the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Flags, the Australian National Flag, and the Pride Flag.

On behalf of the Student Leaders a big thank you to Dion for assisting with the streaming of the event to the whole school and to everyone who supported this assembly by engaging and reflecting on the messages shared.

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the Student Leadership Team in developing this significant inaugural event.
