Visual Arts Years 4-6
with Ms. Nardo, Ms. Mancini and Ms.Nishani
The students in Year Four are continuing their threads and textiles unit on weaving. This week they learned about Reconciliation week, Sorry day and how weaving played a part in Aboriginal culture and traditional basket weaving.
They are developing their knot tying skills as they bind the warps to the loom to create it. Students are also learning how to thread needles and begin their weaving, ensuring they use the 'under and over technique' alternatively on each thread to create the weave. They are learning how to develop their fine motor skills and are learning to be patient and take their time with this task as it can be a bit tricky t manipulate the threads.
Students in Year Five are very excited in the Art Studio as they have commenced the mask making of their "public and private' self mask projects. Some students have been great inquirers who have gone home and collected things to add to their masks to make them meaningful and authentic to themselves. Students have been using coloured tissue paper, paper mache, paints, posca paint pens and adding appendages with cardboard, paper and masking tape to make their masks look interesting and creative.
Students In Year Six are making progress on their on their basket/ coaster weaving. This unit was inspired by the Tjanpi Desert Weavers from Alice Springs in the spirit of reconciliation as we celebrated The National Reconciliation Week on the 27th of May to the 3rd of June in the Secondary Visual Art room. This past week students have learned to sew their wrapped raffia and form a coil shaped spiral. They will then keep building this, till they reach a palm sized circle and then build up their raffia coil mini basket upwards. Students will consolidate their sewing skills and further develop their techniques in the areas of threads and textiles in the Visual Arts curriculum. This unit is an excellent introduction to year 7 art where students will experiment and develop their skills and techniques with ceramics, another art media. In year 7, students will be creating a coil pencil pot out of clay for their 10 week art unit and this is a great way to practise a similar concept using a completely different medium, which involves different skills and techniques. Thus, adding to students artistic skills and repertoire.
