Year Six News

Dear Year Six families,
We can't believe we are already in week six! With the end of Term Two quickly approaching, our Year Six students are keen to share their progress with you. As Year Six teachers, we are so impressed with the efforts each student is contributing to their learning, and we cannot wait to see what we can achieve in the remaining four weeks.
Unit of Inquiry Three:
Students have excitedly been working through our 'How We Organise Ourselves' unit. We have begun planning our election day in which our students are able to run for Year Six parliament. Each student will have the opportunity to run for either the 'Education' or 'Aesthetic' party by putting forward their policies. Students will experience the preferential voting system as they vote on who they would like to be in parliament. The day will be concluded with a Year Six Sausage Sizzle.
Parliament Prize:
Our students have been writing speeches and recording videos for the Parliament Prize Competition. This competition is for Victorian school students, from Grade 5 to Year 12. They are presenting speeches about what they would say to parliament if they were a Member of Parliament. The students have record their own 90-second Member’s Statement telling us about the issues that are important in their community.
Here is a Parliament Prize presentation filmed by 6A member Amitoj Singh.
Reading Groups:
In Reading, students have continued working in their assigned fluid group to familiarise themselves with the comprehension strategies. Each group has been working through different focuses such as comprehension strategies, text structure, language features and language conventions. Students are working on their speaking and listening skills when participating in literacy discussion circles and collaborating with their peers.
Maths Groups:
We recently completed our post-assessment for our Measurement & Geometry fluid groups. During fluid groups, students demonstrated commitment to their learning and developed a deep understanding of Using Units of Measurement. We were incredibly proud of the growth the students displayed over a short period of time.
We have now begun new groups for Statistics and Probability. Students are focusing on Data Representation and Interpretation by analysing data and graphs whilst using data to create their own graphs.
Maths Reflection by Maitri and Elijah:
In our Using units of measurement groups, we completed our post-test. It was really exciting because we have shown massive growth and improvements as a cohort. In our post-test, we were assessed on area, perimeter, volume, units of measurement, time, and much more. During the assessment, we had to rely on our knowledge over the past four weeks of fluid groups. We would like to thank the grade 6 teachers for teaching us new skills and knowledge in a fun and friendly learning environment. Because of our differentiated learning environments, we were able to learn at our own level and pace.
