Year Five News

We are now officially more than half way through Term Two! What an amazing first half of the term we have had! The Year Five teachers are so proud of the determination and resilience the Year Five students have demonstrated so far and we cannot wait to see what the rest of the term has in store!
Unit of Inquiry
This week we have continued to explore how access to opportunities, equality and equity impacts a person’s ability to be successful. We have unpacked what an opportunity is and how it is in the hands of the beholder, as to how they choose to use the opportunity. The students have investigated different children from around the world and their situations and circumstances while delving into what opportunities they have access to, what success looks like to each individual and their chance of achieving success. This was done while exploring human rights and what impact the lack of human rights has on an individual.
Reading
The Year Five students have continued to explore different mentor texts such as 'Malala: My Story of Standing Up for Girls Rights', and 'Stories for Simon', which this week has allowed us to delve deeper into understanding the texts' message, theme and perspective. Students had the opportunity to have deep conversations around the texts and respond to the texts in a way that encouraged them to think about their roles as global citizens and the actions they can take to ensure all humans have access to equal opportunities.
Writing
In writing this week, the students have been researching an historical event to gather evidence and facts to include in their Historical Narratives. The students have used a graphic organiser, to organise and scaffold their information to set them up for success when they begin writing their Historical Narratives next week. The students have enjoyed researching a variety of historical events and thinking about different perspectives of individuals from that time. It is with these perspectives in mind, that they will mix fact and fiction to create their stories.
Mathematics
This week in Mathematics, the Year Five students have been looking at a variety of statistics and data around homelessness, household incomes from around the world and gender equality in the workplace. They interpreted this data and then chose a relevant graph to display the data, incorporating all of the necessary features of the chosen graph. Students were then able to make statements based on their interpretation of the information.
National Sorry Day
The 26th of May was National Sorry Day. The Year Five team took this opportunity to discuss the meaning and importance of such a day and the integral role it plays in our Australian history. We watched videos and had deep classroom discussions which were often student lead. We did a classroom activity decorating hands to create a 'Sorry Sun', which symbolised that we all have a hand in making a change both now and in the future.
Kind regards,
The Year Five Team
