Year Two News

Hello Year Two Parents,

Please read below to find out what the students have been learning in class over the past two weeks:

Unit of Inquiry

Transdisciplinary Theme: How the world works

Central Idea: Human actions directly impact on our world

Reading

In Reading, students have looked at two key areas of comprehension: the TELL method to help describe the author's purpose (text and author; explain author's purpose; locate main idea; list supporting details) and synthesising, learning how to combine new information with existing knowledge to form new understandings. Students have also been looking at persuasive texts, exploring their features, purpose and language conventions through various mediums.

Writing

In Writing, students finished their natural disaster information reports in the form of a brochure and presented them to the class, practising their speaking and listening skills. Students continued their work on persuasive writing, learning about persuasive language, vocabulary and transition phrases and had debates with their classmates about topics related to our new Unit of Inquiry. Students also made a writing goal and put it on Schoolbox to always reflect upon at school and at home.

Maths

In Maths, students completed final assessments for our addition and probability units and undertook two pre tests for subtraction and measurement that they will be working on until the end of Semester Two. Students began delving into subtraction and looking at different strategies to help them solve subtraction problems. Students also started working on data and building their understanding of graph readings.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students continued becoming ‘experts’ in natural disasters, looking at how they are caused and what happens when thatnatural disaster hits and the aftermath on thecommunities. After finishing this unit, students were introduced to their new Unit of Inquiry which is ‘Human actions directly impact on our world’. As a team, students unjumbled this phrase and wrote a mind-map about their prior knowledge of this topic.

Additionally, students attended Provocation Day on Friday last week, which leads into our new unit of inquiry that we began delving into this week which is 'Human actions directly impact on our world'. Students were immersed in activities about concepts including overpopulation, global warming, deforestation, pollution and fossil fuels.
