Year One News

Written by the Year One Team

Dear Year One families,

Students have had a great week of learning! They were excited to participate in our second Year One Assembly this term. We began with a discussion about the different Learner Profiles and how each child can demonstrate them. Then we awarded certificates to students who were displaying these attributes throughout the week. Well done to all our students of the week!

After that, 1I and 1J shared with all the Year Ones in an engaging quiz about facts and opinions. The students thoroughly enjoyed coming together as a whole cohort. We look forward to the next assembly.

Reading

In Reading, students have been continuing to practise their decoding strategies. Some of the strategies they are learning have been Chunk It – look for smaller words inside the word, Slide – through the word, and Stretch – pull the word.

Students have also been looking for interesting leads in their Non-Fiction texts about Space. An interesting lead is an engaging sentence that an author has used to hook their reader in. Students found three different types of interesting leads used in non fiction writing: amazing facts, setting descriptions and questions.

Writing

In Writing, students have been enjoying writing Information Reports about the Earth, Sun, or the Moon. They have begun their information reports using written their own interesting leads,  that they learnt about in their reading lessons. The information reports the students wrote included facts they learnt. Students then used the following  subheadings to add their facts:  introduction, appearance, size and location.

Maths

In Maths, students have been exploring 2D shapes, 3D objects and number lines. Students named various shapes and then found them around their classroom and the school environment. They could identify the different features, such as, faces, edges, and vertices. Students enjoyed using the shape models and making shape patterns digitally. The children have also been learning about, 'number lines', and why they are useful. The students  have enjoyed making human number lines, drawing number lines with chalk, and creating these digitally on their iPads. The website used to make digital number lines and pattern shapes is: https://www.mathlearningcenter.org/apps You are welcome to use this website at home to reinforce the topics with your child.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have continued to enjoy learning about their Unit of Inquiry, with the central idea being, 'Earth is part of an interconnected system that affects our daily lives.’ Students had fun acting like the Sun, Earth, and Moon. They orbited around each other to show how the Earth moves around the Sun and how the Earth spins on its axis.
