Prep News

Dear Prep Families,
We have continued exploring our second Unit of Inquiry centred around the Transdisciplinary Theme; ‘Where we are in place and time’, focusing on the Central Idea, ‘Journeys may lead to explorations and new homes’.
Reading
In Reading, students have been reading fiction and non-fiction texts and we had fun exploring and sorting out our classroom libraries. We have explored features of non-fiction texts and the idea that non-fiction texts give us information and we are able to learn something new.
They have been exposed to the concept of inferencing and we have enjoyed watching some wordless Pixar clips and making inferences by thinking about what they already know and clues to help them make a good guess.
Each week, we continue to revise and introduce ‘Good Reading Strategies’ to the Prep students.
We encourage the students to practise using the strategies they know when independently reading, both at school and at home.
Writing
In Writing, the Prep students have continued to practice their pencil grip and forming our letters correctly when writing on dotted thirds.
Students continue to explore recount writing where they have the opportunity to share and reflect on what they did on the weekend using our 'Think, Draw, Write and Share' model. We have also continued to explore information reports and have had the opportunity to research and record facts about different animals or their own topics of interest.
Each week we our language experiences and have moved for writing in our ‘Special Writing Books’, and using our dotted thirds book while still having the opportunity for students to build on their knowledge of sentence structure and develop their high frequency vocabulary. We are continuing to work on the parts of our sentence and ensuring we begin with a capital letter, use finger spaces and end our sentence with a full stop. When completing our writing we also make sure that the picture we draw matches our writing.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, we have continued to explore the collecting and representing data. Students have had the opportunity of ask and answer questions and record the data they collect using tally marks and pictures. Students have had fun coming up with questions that they wanted to ask their peers.
We have also begun exploring the concept of addition and combining numbers. Students have had the opportunity to use manipulative to combine two numbers. We are focusing on students understanding the vocabularing and the concept of combinging two groups together.
Each week we revise our counting strategies. Students are excited as we are making our way towards our 100 days of school which will be celebrated next term.
Wellbeing
As we continue to explore emotions and our zones of regulations, we have had the opportunity to act out and recognise different emotions. We read the text 'The Red Beast' and focussed on how we can use our zones of regulation to think about how we are feeling and explored how we could make our way back to the green zone if we felt we were in the red zone.
