Our Preps and Year One Music students are really settling into the learning activities for this term.
Over the past few weeks, they have explored the voice and percussion instruments, identifying each of the attributes that contribute to the unique sounds that each instrument makes. This has our inquiry into the key concept of Form, and how materials, shape and method of playing influence the sound that instruments make.
In conjunction with learning about the form of each instrument, we’ve taken the opportunity to have fun with the instruments. In voice, our Preps have learned the school song, exploring physical mnemonics to assist them with memorising the words. Whilst our Year One students learned to sing scales using numbers, and attempted keeping their parts going through fugal entries. On the percussion instruments, our students have learned to read and identify musical patterns on the dgembe and Congo drums. They practiced playing in precision, ensuring they all play at the same time.
This week, our students have been exploring the Electric Keyboards. They learned how to identify each of the notes on the keys using visual mnemonics based on the positions and patterns of the black keys, and they started playing simple songs. The Electric Keyboards allowed the students to explore other instrument sounds which we discovered via a Sound Treasure Hunt game.
