Nominating a beneficiary for your super

Did you know your super benefits may not automatically form part of your estate when you pass away? Save your loved ones’ time and stress by choosing who you want to leave your super to.

Making a beneficiary nomination can help determine who gets your super benefit and any insurance proceeds in the event of your death and help give you peace of mind.

Types of beneficiary nominations

There are two types of beneficiary nominations for super members.

Binding

You decide who receives your super and any externally insured benefits, and in what proportions. This is legally binding on the trustee of your super fund, provided it’s a valid nomination under superannuation law.

You can choose for the nomination to be lapsing or non-lapsing. If you select lapsing, the nomination will expire after three years. A non-lapsing nomination will stay valid until you change or revoke it.

Non-binding

The trustee will decide who receives your super and any insurance benefits, taking into consideration your nomination, circumstances, and the relevant laws at the time of your death.

Who can I nominate?

There are restrictions on who you can nominate, so it’s important to know the rules.

You can nominate one or more of your dependants and/or your legal personal representative. A dependant could be your spouse, child, someone in an interdependency relationship with you, or a financial dependent. If you decide to nominate your legal personal representative, your super will form part of your estate and be distributed according to your will, or the intestacy laws of your state or territory if you don’t have a will.

How do I make a beneficiary nomination? If you’re a UniSuper member, complete the Binding death benefit nomination form to make a binding nomination. You can find it on the Forms and documents page on the UniSuper website.

You can make a non-binding nomination by logging in to your UniSuper online account and navigating to the Beneficiaries menu option. Alternatively, you can submit a Change of details – super members form if you’re a UniSuper super member, which can be found on the UniSuper Forms and documents page.

Learn more Visit the UniSuper website to learn more about nominating a beneficiary for your super. You can also view your current nomination by logging in to your UniSuper online account.

Speak to an expert You can make an appointment to see a UniSuper super consultant face to face or via video for additional help. UniSuper super consultants can explain the difference between the types of beneficiary nominations and walk you through how to make a nomination.

Appointments are available at no extra cost for UniSuper members and non-members. Visit unisuper.com.au/campusbookings or call UniSuper Advice on 1800 823 842 to book an appointment.
