Primary Sport

Andrews Cup Athletics

As we approach the much-anticipated Andrews Cup Athletics competition, our squad has been diligently preparing, and their commitment to training has been truly impressive.

One exciting factor contributing to the high attendance at our Wednesday morning sessions is the delightful 'smoothies' generously provided by the Friends of Sport after training. It serves as a fantastic nutritional incentive, motivating our squad members to be present and give their best.

Recently, on 31 July, we had the privilege of participating in the first practice competition at the University of Queensland Athletics Centre, where we joined six other Andrews Cup member schools. It was so pleasing to see a large representation of Clayfield College colours competing on the track, in the throwing events, and jumps. Special recognition goes to our outstanding 8-year-olds and 9-year-olds, whose attendance was close to 100%. We eagerly await the next meet on Tuesday 8 August, once again at the University of Queensland Athletics Centre.

District Sport

The City District Athletics trials are a significant event on the representative sport calendar. With 33 Primary Schools represented, both boys and girls compete over two days, vying for a spot in the City District Team. Bowden Park in Geebung was a sea of colour, as students, parents, and supporters rallied behind their schools and athletes.

Among them, we had the talented Clayfield College Year 4 student, Sophia Darby, who participated in the 100m, Shot Put, and Long Jump events. Congratulations to Sophia for her remarkable achievements, securing second place in Shot Put and a top 20 finish in the 100m, narrowly missing the semi-finals.

Britton Shield

The boys have been thoroughly immersed in their training sessions, dedicating their time to three exciting sports: Basketball, Cricket, and Aquathlon. The oval on Monday afternoons becomes a hub of sports activity, as students strive to improve their skills in bowling, batting, and fielding. The commitment and enthusiasm shown by the boys is truly commendable.

Secondary Sport

As we continue QGSSSA Sport with Athletics on Friday night and Saturday fixtures, it is important to remember some key points which should be adhered to by all involved. We ask students, coaches and parents to abide by the QGSSSA Code of Conduct, so all involved feel valued, supported and safe.

Competition with Respect

"The QGSSSA has been established to serve our member schools by arranging sporting fixtures and promoting a healthy approach to sporting activity.

The changing attitudes to sport in the community, and the pressure and commercialisation associated with sports in many spheres, have led the Association to feel that its aims and objectives need to be clarified and set out.

We, as an Association, believe we should encourage good behaviour and sportsmanship on the sports field and consider that the following directions should be observed.”

Standards

Reminder to all that it is an expectation that students should arrive in correct Clayfield College uniform for all sporting events. This should mean that students are in the correct playing uniform and Clayfield College tracksuit or jumper if cold. Similarly, students should arrive at events in closed in shoes eg sneakers. Slides are not appropriate.

Students should compete in the correct competition uniform. If students are remaining after their game to support colleagues, they should be dressed in their Clayfield College sport uniform.

Thank you for your support. I look forward to seeing large numbers of support across all our programs throughout the term.

Student Highlights

AFL - Mia Geere (Year 10)

Congratulations to Mia Geere for her outstanding achievement in being named to the U15 Girls All Australian School Sport Australia AFL team. Following the National Championships held in Ballarat last week, Mia's remarkable skills and dedication have rightfully earned her a spot in this prestigious lineup.

Representing Queensland and being named as Co-Captain, Mia played a pivotal role in leading her team to the final round, which saw the Queensland team progress without a single loss, to the final. In the final match against Victoria Navy, the competition was fierce and intense. Both teams battled, making it an exciting showdown. Despite a closely contested match, the Queensland team narrowly missed the victory, with Victoria Navy securing a hard-fought win by just two goals.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Mia Geere on this remarkable achievement. Well done Mia!

Karate - Jessie-Rose Talbot-Cooke (Year 9)

Last weekend, talented karate champion, Jessie-Rose Talbot-Cooke, showcased her remarkable skills at the Queensland Opens Karate Tournament in Cleveland, Brisbane. Her dedication and hard work paid off as she emerged triumphant, securing not one, but two prestigious Gold Medals.

In the highly competitive Black Belt Cadets weight division (54+ kumite event), Jessie-Rose proved her mettle and emerged as the champion, displaying her faultless technique and unwavering determination. Not stopping there, she continued her winning streak in the Open Cadets Kumite event, earning another well-deserved Gold Medal, further solidifying her position as a rising star in karate.

The journey does not end here. Jessie-Rose's excellence has earned her selection on the Queensland team to compete in the prestigious National Championships in Perth later this month. This marks an incredible opportunity for her to showcase her talent amongst the best in Australia.

Congratulations to Jessie-Rose for her outstanding performance at the Queensland Opens Karate Tournament and selection to compete at the National Championships.

We are thrilled to announce Chloe Noon’s (Year 11) selection in the Queensland Athletics (QA) Cross Country team after her performance at the QA All Schools Cross Country Championships in May and more recent result at the State Championships in Toogoolawah.

Chloe’s commitment to training, dedication, and passion for running have truly paid off. Next up on her 2023 Cross Country campaign is the Australian Cross Country Championships.

We will be rallying behind Chloe as prepares to toe the line with the nations' best Cross Country runners on Saturday 26 August at Stromlo Forest Park in Canberra.
