Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Last weekend saw the commencement of our Term 3 AIC sports with tennis, basketball and rugby league competing against Villanova College in Round 1, and hockey continuing in the Brisbane Schoolboys competition, and track and field hosting our first internal meet of the season. It was a busy weekend with much to celebrate for Marist teams across the board.

After a difficult week for the College, I was proud of our boys, particularly the open teams for the character and commitment they showed on the weekend. It started on Friday night with hockey defeating defending premiers St Patricks College 8-2 to remain undefeated in a great team performance. Our 1st IV tennis team had a good win 5-3, with the seconds winning 8-0. The 1st XIII rugby league boys were dominant throughout winning 28-12. The 1st V basketball went down in a tight one to defending premier Villanova in a great team performance by 11 points, for context, no one got within 30 points of Villa last year.

This weekend we welcome Padua College to Marist. With Marist hosting the secondary rugby league fixtures as well it will be a busy day against our local rivals. We look forward to a day of friendly competition. I reminded the boys on assembly this week that as Marist men we must maintain our discipline and control at all times as we represent the College in any sporting competition and in any environment.

Uniforms

A reminder that all old sports uniforms have been retired after a two-year grace period in 2021 and 22. All boys need to be wearing the current uniform, with old supplier uniforms, such as BLK can be worn to training, but cannot be used in competition matches.

Term 3 Internal Competitions

We understand the demand for places in Term 3 sports, by nature of the draw and teams available to participate far outweighs what we can cater for in the AIC competition. I am pleased to be able to share details for our new internal touch competition alongside our internal basketball competition.

The sign-up process is the same as any other sports competition. Log on via Student Café or Parent Lounge, select extra-curricular, click sign up now, click approve sign up, and click submit to school to secure a place.

Hockey – Ms Kathryn Badini (Hockey Coordinator)

Week 2, and the Hockey boys faced the reigning premiers, St Patrick’s College, down at the State Hockey Centre. We quickly took control of the game, with most of the action happening in our attacking circle. Unfortunately, however, despite having many shots at goal, we came off at half-time only one-nil up – a precarious position to be in.

It was a credit to the team that instead of succumbing to frustrations, the boys focused on their press, as well as their lateral passes to eventually bring on a flurry of goals. Nick Keir (12) for the second week in a row scored a hat trick, Oliver Shinkel (11) scored twice, including a brilliant tomahawk between the keeper’s legs, and Harry Cunynghame (12 – named Best Player by SPC), and Joshua Werner (12 – on debut) took advantage of assists to score, and Sebastian Karamihas (12) scored off a deflection. The final result was 8 – 2.

Additionally, our half line deserves a mention – especially, Oliver Shinkel and Cooper Lunn (12), who are always reliable, and Lincoln Stockwell (9), who had a very impressive game, being able to weave that ball through many players.

Thank you to the Year 12 students, especially the boarders, who came out to support the team. I would also like to acknowledge the sportsmanship and solidarity of the St Patrick’s Team.

On Wednesday morning, we also joined All Hallows’ School’s JT1 training – which started not so bright but very early at 6:00am. It was a fun experience and a nice reminder of how universal the game of hockey is.

Next week, we have a doubleheader – St Edmund’s College at State Hockey Centre on Wednesday (which is shaping up to be our hardest game) and Padua College at Burringbar Park on Friday.

Student Achievements

Sean Bright – Water Polo

Sean continues to achieve great things in the sport of water polo.

Sean has recently been in the United States where his team, San Diego Shores water polo club, won the bronze medal at USA Junior Olympics, held in Orange County, California.

Sean is now off to represent Queensland this week, competing in the Australian Schools Water Polo Championships in NSW from Tuesday 25 July to Friday 28 July.

Good luck Sean.

Rugby League

Mr Ryan Apps – Rugby League Coordinator

Week 1 of the AIC Rugby League season was hosted by St Lawrence's College where MCA played against Villanova in all age divisions. We had strong performances across all age divisions including a great win by our 1st XIII. All of the results are posted below.

It was wonderful to see our players represent MCA in all aspects from attitude, teamwork, effort, skills and commitment. We applaud not only the players but our coaches who have worked tirelessly to develop our teams into strong squads that will no doubt go from strength to strength over the coming weeks.

I would like to thank the coaches, support staff, players, parents and supporters for again leading the way in our values, culture and traditions which sets MCA apart from all the others.

Next Saturday is our home round versus Padua College, this is surely set for a very challenging round for all of our teams from Y ear 5 to our 1st XIII. I would love to see as many of our student cohort attend and support all of our teams that are playing at MCA and our primary teams that are playing away at Villanova.

From the 1st XIII Captain - Cody O'May

The 1st round of the AIC rugby league season kicked off at St Laurence’s College on Saturday afternoon. The boys hyped up to verse the strong side of Villanova College. They all knew their jobs and we got to work. 1st minute in, a great kick from Jack Andrews with a kick chase from Tobias Graham caused a drop ball to fall into Jude Knapp’s hands. A lovely offload from him to put Ben Caughley over for his first of three tries on his birthday. Jude Knapp connected really well with his number 9 Lachie McCall to control the whole game and putting loads of pressure on Villa's forwards with hard carries from Leon Karena and Isaac Roach making the score 16 - 0 at halftime. A great start to the second half with Ben Caughley scoring two minutes in. Great footwork and tackles from Tom Howard in the backfield creating amazing opportunities for the boys to score points. With a gritty game, the boys played their hearts out to have a strong win over a strong villa side with the final score being 28-12.

1st V Coach’s Report

The 1st V opened their season against reigning AIC champions Villanova. The team prepared well during the week in anticipation of the big game. The first quarter was a bit scrappy for both teams, we had plenty of good looks but couldn’t finish off around the rim. Declan Tunny opened the scoring with a trademark corner 3 and we settled into a slog fest. Villanova was a little too polished around the court and shot out to a 21-11 quarter-time lead. The second quarter saw Villanova skip out to a 20-point lead but the boys rallied together, played with some physicality and played strong through the contact to cut it to 14 at the half. Jack Forrester needed pulled off play of the year when he got fouled going for a dunk on Villanova’s star guard. The boys realised that with some full-court pressure and a relentless attack on the rim, we had a chance to win this game. Will Ford, Matt Gibson and Spencer Mahoney led the defensive charge getting stop after stop and turning it into easy transition baskets and quickly we had cut the lead to 8. Jack Forrester had an outstanding shooting performance, drilling six threes throughout the contest keeping us close. The group found themselves down 5 points with 4 minutes remaining but as we ran out of juice, Villanova had the answers scoring 5 quick points to end any hope of an Ashgrove upset eventually falling 55 to 66. We now turn our attention to a must-win home game v Padua, 12:15pm this Saturday in the Champagnat Centre.

1st V Captain’s Report

Round one against Villanova College, last year's undefeated premiers, was predicted to be one of the biggest games of the season. With many players set to make their 1st V debut, nerves were high in the dressing room, but also a genuine energy to give it their all. Playing a team filled with representative players allowed our boys to show heart and Marist spirit, keeping the game close and giving the hive something to cheer for. However, after a valiant effort, the team ultimately fell short, with the final score of 55-66.

Despite the loss against a tough Villanova side, there were many positives from the game which the team can be extremely proud of. Our controllables of effort, talk and body language were carried out exceptionally well by all 12 players and is the reason the boys should hold their heads high going into Round 2. A few notable players included Jack Forrester’s masterclass from the 3-point line knocking down a total of 6 clutch three-pointers. Will Ford’s ability to get the rim helped rack up points when in need, Matt Gibson’s defence and Spencer Mahoney’s rebounds on the offensive and defensive ends kept the team in the game.

With Round 2 quickly approaching, the team has another home opportunity to turn the season around against Padua. I invite all of you to support the team at 12:15pm in the Champagnat centre to help us get across the line. It doesn’t go unnoticed.

Tennis

Mr Andrew Ward – Director of Tennis

After a very impressive start to our season in our trial game Marist went into the round against Villanova with high expectations of competing to our fullest potential. Win or lose, our boys knew that if they were to put into practice what they have been learning in their AIC coaching sessions, the results would take care of themselves.

Marist teams not only did this last Saturday but they really dominated every year level from Year 7 through to open teams.

For all AIC enquiries please contact Andrew Ward at MCATennis@marash.qld.dedu.au or call 0437 449 523.

1st IV Match Report

Our day started with our Captains introducing the teams and welcoming them to Marist College. Our boys knew we were in for a fight against a very talented Villa squad. Matches were tight with the first doubles matches with some very highly entertaining play.

A win to Eddie and Fletcher and a close loss to Hamish and Henry saw us at 1-1.

Into the singles matches we go Henry and Eddie both grinding out straight sets wins to put us in a very commanding position at 3-1. A hard-fought loss to Hamish against Villa’s rising young superstar where no point came free and was an extremely entertaining match to watch. Fletcher finished off the singles with a straight sets win and showed his class in the process.

Although we have lost our No 1 player in Louis with an injury early our boys showed grit and determination in grinding out these wins in their singles. Leading 4-2 in matches and ahead on sets Marist boys had already secured the tie and now it was down to the reverse doubles. We started slowly in both matches and then we started our miracle fight back

With Eddie and Fletcher 1-4 down turning the match around to win in a tiebreak 7-6. Very gutsy win to never say die and fight with passion for the school and team. Henry and Hamish also came very close to a comeback win but unfortunately fell agonisingly short at 4-6 down.

All up, a solid performance with the team winning 5-3 and starting the season with high hopes and a dream to win. Congratulations boys on your victory and I could not be happier for you.
