La Lampe Magique (The Magic Lamp)

On Tuesday 18th July, our Primary boys were treated to a traditional French Marionette show of La Lampe Magique (The Magic Lamp) by the French puppetry company Carousel. The story tells of a poor young boy who is tricked by his wicked uncle to find a magic lamp left in an ancient tomb. The lamp grants him 3 wishes from which he defeats all the odds to marry a beautiful young princess.

The boys were able to understand the story delivered in both French and English and had the opportunity to begin to understand the wealth of diversity of culture and tradition around the world. Also of interest is that the Marionette genre was created in France in Marcellin country, Lyon within his lifetime and is still a staple for the entertainment of children and adults around France, somewhat similar to the Punch and Judy style of entertainment, but less violent.
