VCE News
Our VCE students have begun the ‘premiership term’ with a bang! After a well-deserved mid-year break, our Year 11 and 12 students have lifted their performances in both their Unit 2 and Unit 4 classes. Most impressive are the numbers of students attending Study Space after school each day in order to get on top of their studies and begin to master their content. For those students struggling to meet the demands of VCE homework, the Senior School team have begun a supervised study session each Thursday afterschool to help them catch up on outstanding work. Year 10 and 11 students will also soon be finding out their classes for 2024, with course counselling taking place earlier this term. With some huge year levels coming through the ranks, there will be a wider variety of VCE subjects on offer than ever before!
Aspire Higher
The Aspire Higher team was very lucky to have a number of Monash University pre-service teachers present to them at a meeting earlier this term about their experiences in VCE. Topics of conversation included mastering exams, managing stress and the importance of sleep, all of which contribute to high performing academic results. Our pre-service teachers also provided our students with an insight into what university life was like at Monash, and what to expect in their first year as graduates. Thank you to each of the Monash students for imparting their wisdom to our Aspire Higher team! We look forward to seeing our aspirational students putting all of these amazing tips into practice over the coming weeks as they strive to finish their McClelland College journey on a high!
Unleashing the Power of Genetics: A Journey at GTAC
Our VCE Biology Unit 2 students embarked on an exhilarating scientific adventure at the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) in Parkville. Guided by GTAC Education Officers and Scientist Mentors, students explored prenatal and predictive genetic testing. They unravelled chromosomal abnormalities using advanced fluorescent microscopy with Fluorescence In Situ Hybridisation (FISH) tests. Additionally, they mastered the Guthrie test and gel electrophoresis, diagnosing Phenylketonuria (PKU) and studying inheritance patterns. This hands-on experience broadened their horizons and fueled their passion for genetics. We express our heartfelt gratitude to GTAC for this exceptional opportunity, empowering our students' journey in the fascinating world of biology.
Interact Club Sleep In at the School
What better way to ease back into a school term than with a sleep in at the school in the middle of Winter! This was certainly the case for 32 students and 5 staff who braved a chilly Frankston evening in order to raise money for State Schools Relief, a non-profit organisation which supports students and their families in need. Raising over $600 for the cause, the night was a roaring success, with highlights including the competing boys and girls fortresses, some mega games of Twister and Brain Fart, as well as a late-night Maccas run that nearlyyyyyy got all our orders right! With studies showing that individuals who do good deeds are more resilient and optimistic about life, the Interact Club will be capitalising on this to run more feel-good events over the coming months!
AFLW Lightning Premiership
On Thursday 27th July, our Senior Girls Football team participated in the AFLW Lightning Premiership Competition run by St Kilda Football Club. Coming up against some healthy competition in Kilbreda and Toorak Colleges, the girls put in a terrific effort throughout the day. Dominant across the field were Taliah Black in the ruck as well as Kiara Triep, Saige O’Connor and Sienna Robinson running through the midfield. Despite coming under immense pressure throughout the day, the backline was admirably managed by School Captain Carla Azzopardi, who tried her heart out across both games. Well done to all of the players for getting involved in what was a fantastic day! We look forward to following your AFL careers over the coming years with great interest! A big thank you to St Kilda AFLW players Hannah Priest and Georgia Patrikios for running the day so efficiently for us also!
A Glorious Showcase: Taster Day at the IC
Our school's Taster Day was an absolute triumph! Students and teachers alike gathered to celebrate the diverse and captivating subjects offered at our school. The IC looked nothing short of beautiful, adorned with vibrant stalls showcasing various subjects. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of our dedicated teachers and enthusiastic student helpers, the event ran seamlessly. Our students took charge as helpful guides, passionately presenting their favourite subjects and sharing their knowledge with visitors.
International Students to the Football
Providing our International students with a range of authentic Australian opportunities is something that the McClelland College team take great pride in. So it was fantastic to see a number of our Year 12 students taking our International brigade to their first AFL game at Marvel Stadium between St Kilda and North Melbourne. With tickets very generously donated by the St Kilda Football Club through our ongoing partnership, our VCE team watched the home side get up in a close game by only 8 points. The students are already planning their next trip along to cheer on the team as they march towards September!
VCE Media Excursion to the Movies!
This year, the Year 12 Media class studied both Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever as a part of their research into Narrative and Ideology. What a wonderful coincidence that a new entry in the Indiana Jones franchise was released in the same year! To celebrate, the class donned their fedoras and leather jackets and attended a screening of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at Karingal Cinema. Much fun (and choc top consumption) was had by all!
Staff Dominates in Year 12 Soccer Showdown: Teacher Team Triumphs 7-2!
In a thrilling display of talent and sportsmanship, the annual Staff vs. Student Year 12 Soccer match was held in the gym on Monday. The highly-anticipated clash witnessed the teacher team showcasing their expertise and teamwork as they outmanoeuvred the spirited student squad, securing a decisive victory with an impressive 7-2 scoreline. The staff’s triumphant performance was spearheaded by standout players Mr. Lojanica, Mr. Maccora, and Mr. Colquhoun-Matthews with great support from Mr. Kight in goal and Mr. Ferra coming off the bench to add some flare to the game. With their years of experience and undeniable skill, these educators skillfully navigated the field, leaving the student defenders in awe and unable to halt their formidable attack. However, the student team didn't back down without a fight. Showing incredible resilience and determination, Cohen Lee, Bakhiet Bakhit, and Blaze Ferrari emerged as the stars of their team. Their relentless efforts and remarkable individual talents kept the match intense, and their teamwork posed significant challenges to the seasoned teacher players. The win sees the staff pull ahead 7-4 in the race for the Staff vs Student cup. The next event, Charades, becomes a must-win for the students in order to have a chance of getting their hands on the cup!
House Soccer Tournament
To celebrate the Women’s Soccer World Cup, McClelland College ran a House Soccer Round Robin during Week Four of the term. The event was well attended by the Year 11 and 12 students, with teams of five rotating on and off the court. In what was a fiercely contested battle, each team scored multiple goals in a high scoring affair. Highlights included some dominant work on the last line of defence by both Jack Conell and Logan Anseline, as well as some fancy footwork up and down the court by Charlie Bassarek, Kane Robie-Martin and Bakhiet Bakhit. Equally impressive was the huge crowd of supporters that came down to cheer their houses on! Well done to everyone for getting involved! A fantastic display of both our school and house spirit!
