Poems in Action!

We know that the Victorian Curriculum unpacks skills for our students across different forms of writing. That is why over the course of the year students will complete Narratives, Persuasive Writing, Recaps, Procedural Writing and more! At the moment many of our students are working through the interesting area of Poetry!

Sometimes we can think poetry means lots of rhyming when we write, which can give us a bit of a fright! (sorry I had to haha) The reality is though that poetry is a really diverse form of writing which allows our students to try many different forms. Let's unpack some below!

Haiku

A Haiku is a traditional Japanese type of poetry which closely analyses syllable patterns. Our students understand a syllable as a part of the pronunciation of a word, or how we can break words down into different parts.

A Haiku follows a syllable pattern of 5-7-5, with three lines being used to tell a short story on a given topic. Please enjoy some examples from our Year 3/4 students below:

Concrete Poems

A concrete poem mixes both creative words with interesting type faces and patterns. It allows students to think creatively about a topic but then bring some design elements into their poem as well as they organise letters and words.

Blackout Poem

A blackout poem is an interesting concept that takes plenty of texta! Taking an existing piece of writing, whether that be from a novel, article etc, blackout poetry requires the writer to black out or redact a majority of words on the page. What is left are a collection of odd words making a poem!

Free Verse Poetry

As the name implies free verse has no set structure! It allows the writer to pour their thoughts onto a page without any need to count syllables, organise their thoughts or even rhyme. These types of poetry are very expressive. Please enjoy some examples below from our Year 5/6 Students!

So as you can see, far removed from trying to find a word that rhymes with orange! Our students are given many chances to express themselves in this form of writing.

Book Week 2023

How exciting as we embark on Book Week 2023! The theme for this year is 'Read, Grow, Inspire', and we can't wait to launch into a week of fun activities!

There are two key reminders for our parents. First our two competitions! We have a colouring competition and a character design competition! We would truly appreciate parents encouraging entries! Winners and prizes will be handed out next Friday at our parade.

Speaking of, our Book Week Costume parade will take place next Friday the 25th of August at 9.00 AM. All parents, students, teachers and younger siblings are encouraged to dress up in their most creative book related costume!

We can't wait to celebrate all things reading next week and see some brilliant costumes on Friday!

Take care,
