Match Reports, Saturday, 29th July - Boys' Football

BMGS U13s defeated Chevalier College, 3-1

It was gratifying having nearly every player at the game this weekend. Thank you, parents, for your efforts to get the boys on the bus and to the game, and also for coming to watch! Our lethal spear, the sublimely synergistic trio of The Cannon, Golden Boots, and Captain Valiant, aka “Little Messi”, set up a beautiful combination which Tom converted in the opening 5 minutes.   The focus and determination of the boys never wavered, and they pressured Chevalier throughout the match.   The few times that Chevalier got the ball, they met a wall of stiff resistance from our shield, who maintained a disciplined formation as we practiced, and employed the “bodies on the line” tactic to deny Chevalier any chance at scoring, although the clearances could have been more effective.   The Steel Curtain was, as ever, consistent and dependable, leading by example and literally putting his body on the line to deny Chevalier. Caspian, the BFG, was easily able to stop the few balls that came his way. Unlike the last time we played Chev, there was no second half brain fade from our boys. They say the oranges and jelly snakes energise them! They were just as consistent in the second half, with Olly scoring in the eighth minute. Max had a brilliant day in left mid, tackling relentlessly, winning many balls and feeding them to the attack, to win a deserved Man of The Match trophy. Silas, our brilliant all-rounder, found the net soon after, making the score 3-0. It was a lower winning margin than our last Chevalier game, where we were leading 4-0 at half time, but this time, we were in complete control and never looked like we could lose. In the dying minutes of the game, Jenson tried to clear a ball, but spun it into the net past Caspian to give Chevalier a late goal. Jenson was disappointed, and it’s a testament to the high quality of boys we have in this team how everyone rallied around to console him and lift his spirits. No blame, no regrets, just the will to push forward, grow and win together! Final score 3-1. Tomorrow’s training session will focus on areas that didn’t work so well in this game, to really tighten our play for the match against St Spyridon's on the 5th! At the beginning of the season, when we set our individual goals, the attainment of victory and the status that follows, were often cited as one of the strong motivators by the boys. We’re well along that route! This Saturday, could all the boys please be rested, refreshed, hydrated, bring inhalers etc and let’s give Spyros a game to remember.

Mr Zen Nzula, Coach

BMGS U14s were defeated by Chevalier College, 2-0

A top of the table clash at Chevalier College had the boys pumped up for a big game.

The boys started well in the first half and were gradually gaining momentum throughout the half and started finding holes in the Chevalier defence, especially down the flanks with runs by Sam, Toby, Alton and Henry getting us deep into the Chevalier half. Solid defending by the opposition continued to repel our advances and their game plan to boot every advance we made deep into the crowd was starting to impact our flow.  Towards the end of the first half Chevalier were able to make a break down the right wing and unfortunately a low cross was slotted home to take Chevalier 1-nil up going into half time.  A spirited half time team talk led by Jimmy had the boys motivated and ready to go in the second half. Wave after wave of attack by BMGS was thwarted by the solid defending of Chevalier and I lost count of the thrown-ins we had deep in their half following their clearances. Chevalier were able to make a break down the left wing towards the end of the second half and were able to capitalise with a wonderful finish to make it 2-nil.  Although 2-nil down the boys continued to push for a goal and always played with the positive team attitude they are know for, continually providing each other vocal support throughout the match.  Our defensive unit were especially strong in this game and were fearless in their tackling against much larger opponents.  Whilst talking with the opposition coach after the game, he wanted me to pass on his congratulations to all of the boys for playing the game in the right spirit and for being such tough opponents.  This game will add a little bit of extra motivation for us when it comes to Semi-Finals time.  I will leave this quote with you boys “Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn”. Let us use this loss to make us stronger as a team for the next game.

Mr Chris Johnson, Coach

BMGS U15s were defeated by  Chevalier College, 3-0

The U15s game kicked off with a huge contingent of U14s players. Due to a late start in the Second XI game, Jed, Otto and Charlie were occupied making up the numbers on the neighbouring field. The U14s rallied and bolstered our ranks. Most notably, Toby Hammon took the goalkeeper position and saved three shots in the first ten minutes. For one of them, he completed an impossibly high reach to knock the ball over the crossbar. For a second, he reached long and laid his body on the line. For a third, he crowded out a player in 1v1 and forced their shot wide of the goal. These saves left spectators cheering in awe!

The defensive line, Lachlan, Raph, Dante and Sam, worked hard to chase and clear many a ball. Dylan and Finn took the centre of the park, leading the younger players who were trying their hand at new, offensive, positions (Kit and Mitch). Josh soon subbed on as a striker, whilst Henry took the left wing and Fabian took the right.  We struggled to find an opening during the play in this game, but the whole team worked hard to shut down efforts and to knock the ball around. Our passing and communication continue to improve each week.  Unfortunately, Finn received a nasty head clash towards the end of the first half, which needed medical attention. Thankfully, Mr Zen stepped in and helped to coach whilst I was occupied. Despite their efforts, the BMGS boys went down 3-0, by the end of the second half.  On to our last game for the season – a last home match before we hang up the cleats.

BMGS Second XI drew with Chevalier College, 0-0

With Chevalier sitting on top of the table, BMGS were eager for a result that could shake up the competition before the finals begin. From the kick off, BMGS came out firing. Despite only having ten players available, the extra man on Chevalier didn’t prove to be an advantage.  Laurits and Jem took control in the middle of the park, and provided excellent attacking chances for Charlie and Thomas up front, whose pace and strength caused problems for Chevalier’s defence. Ben and Nathan worked well alongside Charlie, Otto and Jed, in the back line, as both teams were going back and forth in offense and defence. Callum was on fire in between the posts. After a brilliant save, he was unfortunately tackled hard, resulting in a red card for Chevalier’s right wing.  With both teams down to 10 men, BMGS were looking to capitalise. Tom, Charlie and Laurits all came so close to opening the scoring, but unfortunately their efforts were unsuccessful.  The half time talk allowed us to regroup and keep our strong game up. Positions were shuffled around as we went to 3 at the back, with Jed covering the Chevalier striker and rotating from CB to CDM.  From the restart, the boys came out even stronger, with their hard and high press forcing Chevalier to drop back. Chevalier’s attacking efforts had improved as they broke through our lines and were through on goal, but Callum was quick off his line and made two amazing 1 v 1 saves - making himself big and throwing his body on the line.  Young Charlie was having the game of his life, showing his skill and selflessness, and ultimately proving his age wasn’t a disadvantage at all. Otto also showed class and composure in defence, applying support for the incredible efforts of Ben who also was having the game of his life. Jed stuck to the plan and was instrumental at rover as he stuck to his man and gave him no room to threaten our goal, shutting him down every time.   Still yet to see a goal from both teams it was clear that BMGS were in control of the game as Chev were desperately trying to stop the strong efforts from Charlie, Laurits and Tom. Jem continued to own the middle of the park with much confidence and almost came close to scoring but unfortunately Chev held on as the final whistle came and the match ended goalless. Wow boys, what a game; a massive result against the competition leaders and an absolute thriller of a game to watch. A much deserved point against a very rough team. The dream is alive and well. Let’s keep it up! Onto next week! Man Of The Match - Ben Delaney ( The Brick Wall! )

BMGS First XI defeated Chevalier College, 3-0

The Firsts boys traveled down to the Southern Highlands for our last away game of the regular season to take on Chevalier College. The long and delayed trip down saw the squad take the field without a proper warmup. BMGS kicked off with a full squad for the first time this season, with every player available for selection. The boys came out fast with their usual kick off routine, Will G sending it long to put the pressure on in Chevalier’s half, looking for an early chance. Skipper, Jett Fendall, led the middle of the park alongside Grono with Jaxon sitting behind in CDM. Jack held strong in between the sticks as Bill Klein got his start of the season, holding our back line with Will Zakis, Isaac and Connor. Max, Jaiden and Flynn caused problems as the up front trio.   After some brilliant defensive duties, Connor was pushed out of the field onto rough terrain, but got up - grazed and bleeding – and took to the bench for a short time, still cheering for Grammar.  The BMGS boys were fired up, but worked hard at keeping their cool.  Soon Jaiden whipped in a beautiful ball that found Flynn’s head, to score a beauty. After a substitution, Trin and Richard slotted neatly into our back line, with Xavier and Oliver taking over on the wings.  The four sets of fresh legs made an instant impact. Xavier and Oliver linked up perfectly with Max, Jett and Grono, and Oliver smashed home our second goal from some excellent team play to end the first half BMGS 2 - Chev 0.  The second half began and BMGS continued their dominance as Isaac and Jaxon showed class in their defensive efforts and won back possession with ease. As usua, Jack pulled off confident saves, but his distribution was particularly superb, with his long kicks and throws always finding BMGS feet. Connor, not phased by his injury, returned to the field in style with skill and composure as he ran through the Chev midfield. Jaiden, Ollie and Flynn worked tirelessly up top as Max dropped back into midfield to support the strong efforts of Jett and Grono. Bill and Zakis continued their hard work in defence alongside Richard and Trin. The boys played without panic; Isaac’s communication provided crucial direction and game management. A couple more chances came and went for Xav, Flynn, Ollie and Jaiden as they all continued to apply the pressure in Chev’s final third. With little time remaining it was Jett who sealed the deal, converting a great shot from a scrappy play to finish the game off BMGS 3 - Chev 0.  Well done, lads; your hard work, class and mentality all came off in this game. Another big and well deserved win. A beautiful game to witness and be a part of. STILL Undefeated. Onto next week, let’s get it done!  Goal Scorers - Flynn Nichols 1, Oliver Drew 1, Jett Fendall 1.  Man Of The Match - Connor Secker ( The Warrior At Left Back! )
