MYP numerical grades

When MYP assessment tasks have been marked and results are released on SEQTA, numerical grades ranging from 0 - 8 for the criteria that have been assessed are visible. For those not used to the MYP marking system, these numbers may be confusing and may leave you wondering, what did my child achieve? The most important thing to understand about the MYP marking system is that it is the descriptors that come beside the numbers, not the numbers in isolation, that you should pay attention to. It might be useful to consider the numbers as a code that directs you to a corresponding descriptor. The YouTube video below, created by Diane Smith, provides a broad explanation of how the MYP marking system works, and in just 2:30mins!

MYP implementation update: verification visit

Since 2018, Teachers of Years 6 – 10 students have been gradually implementing the framework of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP). During this period, GNLC has held candidacy status with the IBO (International Baccalaureate Organisation). As a candidate MYP school, we have worked closely with an experienced consultant appointed by the IBO, Barbara Wrightson. Barbara has been an invaluable guide to the MYP teachers and myself as we improve and enhance our GNLC MYP each year, and as we close the candidacy phase of MYP implementation, we thank her for all of her contributions to GNLC.

The final step in the candidacy phase is to apply for authorisation status with the IBO. This process is comprehensive and involves submitting thorough explanations and supporting documentation about our College’s educational philosophy, resources allocated to support the MYP and the curriculum itself. The application for authorisation culminates with a two day verification visit from a team appointed by the IBO, which will take place in October 2021.

As part of the two day visit, a meeting with parents and guardians of MYP students will take place with the visiting team. In organising the agenda for the verification visit, we are seeking parent/guardian volunteers to participate in this meeting. Volunteers may not be employees of GNLC.

If you would be willing to volunteer to participate in this meeting, please contact Erin Bagot, MYP Coordinator, via email at bagote@goodnews.vic.edu.au
