The Academy of Imperfection - Dr Billy Garvey, Paediatrician

Go get your pens and notebooks everyone! In this edition of The Academy of Imperfection, students Hugh, Ryan, Josh sit down with famed paediatrician, Dr Billy Garvey of The Royal Children’s Hospital. Currently, Billy regretfully has a two and a half year waiting list to see him in person, but is keen to reach as many of you as possible NOW. And with all the talk on our podcast about parenting recently, we felt this was a very necessary episode. Billy may not look like one of Australia’s most respected and in-demand paediatricians, as we speak about in the episode, but gee whiz, he sure does talk like it!

The Resilience Project

We are a proud Resilience Project Partner School. We deliver their emotionally engaging program and provide evidence based, practical strategies to build resilience throughout our school community. The program focuses on three positive mental health strategies: Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness.

For more information or examples of how to implement GEM (Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness) into your household please visit https://theresilienceproject.com.au/at-home/everyone/

How to Implement a GEM Chat at home-Gratitude Questions These daily questions have been developed to help families practise the GEM principles. They are a great way to facilitate positive conversations as your family share some at either in the morning, afternoon or evening or at a time that works best. Check out some great GEM CHAT questions here:

●What were three things that went well for you today?

●Who is someone you feel really grateful for today? Tell us why.

●What is it about our home that makes it our home/special family place?

●What is something you are looking forward to tomorrow?

Helping your anxious child

Anxiety in children is normal. Childhood anxieties and fears include separation anxiety, fear of the dark and worries about school. The key to supporting your anxious child isn't to try to eliminate anxiety, but to help a child manage it.
