Hands on Learning Update

This week at HOL we’ve been making seed spacer tools

What is a seed spacer tool?

...and why do I need one!

A seed spacer tool helps you to grow perfect seedlings effortlessly. Similar tools are used in nurseries for speed and accuracy. By making one you can start reusing old punnets that otherwise will end up in landfill.

The secret to growing (or propagating) plants from seed is to sow seeds with the correct spacing and at the right depth. The seed spacer takes the guesswork out of this and makes propagating easy.

It will also save you a tonne of money as it is much cheaper to grow seedlings than buying them from a nursery. But more importantly, you can grow all sorts of heirloom varieties that are not sold at your local nursery. You will find that heirloom veggies - what Nan and Pop used to eat - are far superior as they are bred for taste

rather than for surviving long periods of cold storage, being shipped around the globe and sitting on supermarket shelves.

Right now in Melbourne is the perfect time to start your tomato seedlings for an early crop. But this year, perhaps more so than ever, I also recommend trying sunflowers! They are easy to grow and put a smile on anyone's face, no matter how many days of lockdown have passed (or are still to come). All you need is a little patience: they will take five to ten days to germinate on your window sill, and if looked after, should be in full bloom by November!
