Literacy and Numeracy
2021 NAPLAN Data
This week, our Year 3 and Year 5 students received their NAPLAN results. We have much to celebrate at St James and this data is a reflection of learning that takes place from Foundation - Year 6 at our school as we are able to analyse trends and growth.
It is important to remember that this data provides a snapshot of each learner at this particular moment in time. The data collected does not define who our students are. There are so many aspects that make them who they are! At St James, we have many other data sources that we gather, collate, analyse and celebrate.
This year, our students performed better than the State in all areas of literacy - Reading, Writing, Spelling and Grammar and Punctuation in both Years 3 and 5. Whilst our students performed slightly below the state in Year 3 Numeracy, it was pleasing to see that our Year 5 students were well above the state and the growth from Year 3 to 5 and Year 5 to 7 were both above the expected growth.
Many of our Year 3 students achieved higher than the minimum of Band 2 in literacy and numeracy, with some students achieving beyond Band 6. Our range in Year 5 spread between Bands 4 and 8, showing how our classroom teachers cater to varying needs in the classroom. Of particular significance are our exceptional results in Year 5 Reading and Numeracy.
The staff here at St James work hard to meet the needs of all students whether it be through intervention, extension and quality classroom programs. As a staff, we will continue to unpack and analyse the data to improve instruction but also to inform future actions and decisions in learning and teaching for our community.
