Exploring City Galleries

The senior Art and Studio Arts students were excited to attend the StArt Up - Top Arts exhibition on the second day of its opening. The day began with students attending a lecture to learn more about the range of art forms and concepts exhibiting students had explored. Next, students went into the studio space for the rare opportunity to look through the visual diaries and learn more about the developmental process which is critical to student success in their studies. The final stage of the morning program was where students went into the exhibition. Students were excited to see the work of one of our past students, Nikki Phillipson on display. After lunch students enjoyed the opportunity to explore other exhibitions and participate in some of the hands-on activities.

At the beginning of this term the Year 11 Studio Arts students attended a Street Art and alternative gallery space excursion. Under the supervision of the ‘Urban Sprawl’ guide, students found hidden ‘street art’ treasures while learning about the history of this art movement and the legal consequences for artists working on the streets. The afternoon involved students attending ‘alternative’ art spaces to participate in more immersive art experiences and engage with contemporary and interactive artworks.

In the first week of May, 53 students undertaking the middle school Costume and Theatrical studies and Textiles subjects attended the 200 Years of Fashion exhibition currently being held at the National Gallery of Victoria. Educational staff guided students through this extraordinary exhibition providing a wonderful insight into the historical events that generated the ongoing changes to fashion in Australia.
