Secondary 11/12

SHJ

Term 3, SHJ have been completing an Integrated Unit on Sports in our Community.  Students have been researching and having the opportunity to visit and learn about Sporting Venues within our own backyard, such as the MCG and Etihad Stadium.

They learned that there are various sporting communities, such as school sports, small community sports and the professional sports community. Also, students of SHJ have been researching and learning about local athletes.

We had the pleasure of Cricket Victoria coming to us for a visit.  What an experience to have John Hastings and Xavier Crone come and give a talk about their own experiences in Cricket.  Students were given the opportunity to ask questions and gain further insight into sports within our community.  Everyone then had an amazing time outside learning skills and playing a game of cricket with these two professional cricket players.  It was a fabulous experience and we thank Cricket Victoria, John Hastings and Xavier Crone for taking the time to come in for a visit.

STC

This semester STC are studying the environment.  In order to do this, we are looking at various elements of the environment (such a native plants, waterways and pollution).  Last week STC went for a river walk along the Plenty River in Greensborough.  We are recording our learning on film in order to make a ‘spockumentary’ (a spoof documentary) called ‘A Guide for Geeks Going Outside’.  This spockumentary will be aimed at encouraging students to put their digital devices down and go and explore the outside world.

SAP

Third term SAP had the fortune to receive a grant from the Cherry Ballart Partnership Program with the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. We started with a smoking ceremony and were welcomed to come try. We went behind the scenes of the gardeners, looked and tried germinating seeds, composting, planting, looked at varieties of cacti, saw scientific timers and foggers in action. We have walked around the gardens looking at special plants, indigenous plants, Guilfoyle's Volcano, used binoculars for bird watching, looked at the eels, and a variety of other areas. We also visited the Cranbourne Gardens which is also a Botanic Garden. It was a lovely day seeing the red dirt of the deserts and different types of native plants. It was well worth a visit.

SSJ

As part of the Post Connections program, SSJ went to Greensborough Plaza. Whilst doing our Supermarket Treasure Hunt, something special was going on outside the newly opened fruit shop on the ground level. Former Masterchef Contestant Dani Venn, was filming a cooking segment. Our students had the opportunity to watch her cook Mexican food and to say hello to her. Con especially enjoyed waving to the camera and hopes to be a celebrity on TV.
