NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy in 4 x 1hr blocks across the next two weeks. As a school we utilise the data from NAPLAN to support us in developing learning goals, learning programs and growth for our students. Please take some time across the weekend to speak with your child about NAPLAN and encourage them to do their absolute best effort.

World Maths Day Incursion

All students in the school engaged in the World Maths Day incursion last Friday. This incursion provided students with a range of hands-on activities requiring them to work collaboratively while applying the skills or problem solving, reasoning and critical thinking. In visiting each session, I was exceptionally proud of the effort of our students and the skill application they showed when working through some challenging tasks. At the end of the day I spoke with the facilitator and asked if he felt the day went well. His response was overwhelmingly positive with him saying he was so impressed with how our students conducted themselves and with their capacity to problem solve.

Transport

I would like to thank one of our parents that raised some concerns with the safety of our students crossing the Railway Line. With so much railway works occurring the intersection can at times be quite confusing for our students to identify when it is safe to cross. We will be flagging some of these concerns with Local Council to see if there are any other measures to support the safety of children crossing the related intersections. Can I ask that parents please have a conversation to their children about always using any available Supervised Crossing Areas and taking particular precaution when crossing a road without a supervised crossing. Additionally, if we can also take precaution in our School Carparks to drive slowly in/out, reverse park and to not double park or block the flow of traffic.

School Council Nominations

School Council nominations closed last Friday 3 March and we thank those who have submitted a nomination form. These members will be elected to Council without the need for a ballot and voting process as the number of applicants was less than the number of available positions.

We still have Parent and Community Vacancies unfilled and I am calling for further nominations. These nominations are to be lodged by close of business March 16th. Forms are available to be completed at the Office. We understand the constraints of the busy lives we all lead and work to keep the workload of a School Council position restricted to the meeting attendance once per month. I encourage you to please consider joining our School Council.
