Music News

"Music is meant to be shared. To perform is a communicative act. In a world where everyone feels increasingly isolated, we need to work even harder to find ways of sharing that reconnect us with our audiences and communities. Doing something real, to share with others, infuses learning with meaning and real world accountability. Giving feels good."  Ingrid Martin - Musician

Seeing all of our musicians return has been terrific. It is lovely to see and hear  the Tullow building full of music classes and ensembles. Our biggest problem is that quite a few of our wind players and singers are still not allowed to actually play at school but there are other musical avenues at our disposal. The bands and class ensembles have been studying different styles of music and the cultures of the nations that have created them. The girls have been humming and playing percussion instruments to counter these issues.

The frustration of not having public performances needs to be endured because that will make them all the more special when we can all get together. In the meantime it is really important that all of our girls stick at it. They need to keep working hard at improving their individual skills so our department will still be alive in the community's minds, ears and hearts.

Farewell to our Year 12's

The last week of our year 12's saw us farewell Giselle Karaan, Kezzia Chan and Sylvia Griffin. This was done in small celebrations with the various groups the girls performed with over their time at Killester. I would like to thank all three of the girls for their commitment to the music department. None of them studied VCE music this year but that didn't stop them leading our younger girls in the various groups: Concert Band, Senior Vocal Group and Stage Band. It's great when girls follow the journey right through their schooling. All who do it express a real enjoyment for the social friendships and music making opportunities they have had. Well done girls on a great six years!

Rocky - Gonna Fly Now  - The Brass Department

They are at it again folks. The brass players at Killester have produced a video of just about everyone's favourite fanfare- the Theme from Rocky. There is some great playing from all concerned from our senior players right down to girls who have only started playing this year. Have a listen here:

Instrument return

This is just a call out to any student who still has an instrument/ music stand that is meant to be returned after the lockdown. If you can remember to do this over the next week it will make my life a lot easier towards the end of the year and allow us to get repairs done. It doesn't matter if you have had it longer than expected, just get it back to the front office, no questions asked!
