Year 12 VET Fashion

It takes a little disruption, a grain of sand to create a pearl in an otherwise ordinary shell. And so, the Year 12 Fashion students persevered in an adverse situation and created amazing gems of work. Often working on their own at home and juggling online tutorials, they managed to complete the requirements of the Certificate II Applied Fashion Design and Technology Course with startling results.

On Wednesday last week, the fashion students were able to have the photoshoot and parade they thought would not be possible. They completed the gowns and fitted them to their models. The workshop was transformed into a photography studio and the classroom was converted into a hair and makeup dressing room.

The models, who are also students, took part in a photoshoot whilst Mr Kelleher filmed them on the mini catwalk. They showcased each garment to perfection falling into the character and striking pose to suit each style. Stay tuned for the fashion parade video. The fashion students compiled a research and design folio, fabric swatch book, a woven and felt samples as well as 3 separate garments to complete the requirements of the course. The theme this year was ‘Magical Fantastical’ and each student interpreted it in her own way, researching ideas and developing design concepts.

The Magical Fantastical story began a year ago during transition week, the year 12 students began the unit by creating a breast plate for a warrior princess made from Papier Mache and scraps of fabric and hardware. Then early this year, they looked at sustainability, and modified a Kimono pattern to create a cloak for a mystical queen made totally from scraps and off cuts of donated upholstery fabrics: this was an awesome feat as the students had to design and construct the Kimonos all under lockdown!

The last brief was to create a gown suitable for a fairy tale themed gala event. The students constructed these glamourous garments in record time, and yet the results were fitting for a truly Magical Fantastical fairy tale ending.

All this would not have been possible without the support of the many people who made allowances and provided us with opportunities for the girls to complete and showcase their work - we especially would like to thank: the principal Mrs Sally Buick, Mr Steve Mc Phail, Ms Loreto Cannon, Ms Eva Kordupal, Ersilia Cincotta, Mr Richard Kelleher, the amazing models Lily, Kelly, Gabbie, Ruveena, Angela, Sandra, Vanessa, Mariah and Jerina. But most of the all, the accolades should go to the Fashion class of 2020 Julia, Fiona, Mia, Maria, Emily and Emelia.

Congratulations on a magnificent showcase,

Mrs Anna Miha
