Japanese Day-

Friday 4th August

CELEBRATION

The school is holding a Japanese Day on Friday 4th August to celebrate Japanese culture. This year, the Japanese Day will be in recognition of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Memorial Days.

Students will have the opportunity to fold origami paper cranes (orizuru), inspired by the story of Sadako, a ten year old girl who tried to fold a thousand orizuru to cure her illness. After Sadako’s story was published, orizuru became a symbol for peace.

You might like to have a go at home! There are many tutorials available on the internet. We are aiming to fold one thousand orizuru so that we can send them to the Hiroshima Peace Park and Monument in Japan.

Japanese Day will also involve an OPTIONAL dress up day.

Dress up in anything that is related to Japan. Be creative! Ideas could include:

-red and white coloured clothing and/or accessories (e.g. cut out red circle and sew onto white top)

-pop culture paraphernalia (e.g. badges, hats, toys, T-shirts of Pokemon, Studio Ghibli, Sanrio)

-food (e.g. sushi roll, nigiri sushi, ramen, sweets, soy sauce, fish)

-traditional dress (yukata/kimono/hakama style)

-plants (e.g. cherry blossom flowers, sakura/bamboo/gingko/Japanese maple, cut out from paper)

-head-to-toe black clothing for ninja style

martial arts uniforms

-places in Japan (e.g. Mount Fuji, temples, rock gardens)

-art (e.g. Hokusai)

There is still time to place an order for a sushi lunch for the day. Place form and exact money in an envelope marked ‘Japanese Day’ for your child to put into the lunch order tub.

Orders for this close this Thursday, July 27th.

If you have any questions, please come and see me in the Japanese Room.

じゃ、またね!
