Grade 2 Snapshot Weeks 4&5

Fortnightly iNewsletter

General Information

Dear Parents,

Please have a read of this snapshot to find out what is happening in our classrooms this fortnight.

The students continue to display enthusiasm and excitement about being back at school. We are thrilled to see them working productively and giving their best effort.

Writing

Students are continuing to develop their narrative writing skills. They have used the writing process to write a narrative of their choice and will apply these skills again to an independent narrative. Students are learning about the craft of being a story teller by including descriptions, a build up and trying to visualise their story events in their mind.

Reading

We are continuing to focus on traditional literature. Students will begin to compare similar fairytales as well as multiple versions of the same fairytale from different cultures. They will compare the characters, settings, themes and messages of different stories. Students will also have a chance to creatively present one of their favourite fairy tales.

Word Study

Students will continue to learn the remaining jobs of Silent Final E:

  • Job 4: Makes sure every syllable has a vowel
  • Job 5: Imposter (no other reason)

Students are continuing to practise the codes as well as beginning to listen and write the code to assist with spelling.

Maths

Students will begin to learn about fractions. Our learning intentions are:

  • I can identify halves, quarters and eighths
  • I can model fractions using equal parts
  • I can write fractions correctly

Students will identify fractions used in every day life and then have multiple exposures to creating fractions using different shapes and collections.  They will learn that we name fractions by identifying the total number of equal parts (denominator) and counting how many we have selected (numerator).

Unit of Inquiry

This week we are finishing our inquiry into How We Express Ourselves. Students are continuing to learn about the attributes of a Global Citizen and how these skills and attitudes can help develop intercultural relationships.

Our final unit of inquiry is our Where We Are in Place and Time. Our central idea is 'Relationships exist between people and places.' Students will tune into this inquiry by identifying examples of places that can change and that can be preserved within the school, as well as thinking about significant places for them.

Wellbeing

We are focusing on the learner profile attributes of being Caring, Open-minded and Inquirers. This helps us be connected to each other and become global citizens. Please help reinforce the understanding of these attributes by pointing out to children when they are showing these qualities.
