SKiPPS Basketball co-ordinator needed

As most families are very aware, in normal times, basketball plays a huge part in the sporting and social networks of the school.

Across all year levels, the SKiPPS basketball teams bring together students and parents and the regular training and Playball competition games are an important part of our school's identity. The focus on fun, teamwork, participation and staying active are really important messages for our children to understand.

Whilst the teams represent SKiPPS, the whole enterprise is actually run independently from the school. The work involved in organising training slots, uniforms and providing advice is done by a parent volunteer - the basketball co-ordinator.

For the last four years this has been done by Pauline Crichton, mum of Ewan in Year 4 but sadly she is having to step-back from the role from the start of next year. We thank her for her hard work and keeping things running so smoothly from the background during this time.

We are therefore in need of another parent (or perhaps a couple of parents working together) to put their hand up as our new basketball co-ordinator.

Pauline would be very happy to work with a new co-ordinator and provide a full handover and she has summarised the key tasks as follows;

  1. Organise the training roster. This should only really need to be done at the beginning of each year & I normally try to get it done in Dec/Jan before term starts; occasionally teams ask to move during the year.
  2. Organise uniforms for each team, which entails collecting the uniform rental each year, organising replacement uniforms, e.g. if kids need a bigger size etc.
  3. Be a sounding board/mediator if & when disputes arise within or between teams. This doesn't happen too often but it does sometimes.

Once or twice a year I also send the team managers the school policy, just to remind them of the expectations.

I can often go for weeks or months without there being any significant activity other than say providing a new uniform or two as players join/leave. The busiest times are Dec/Jan with the roster & organising uniforms.

If you think you might be able to take on this role to ensure that basketball continues to be such a big part of SKiPPS, then we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch with Pauline at  paulinec71@hotmail.com and me at neil.scott@education.vic.gov.au.
