PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

FAREWELLS, EXAMS AND PATHWAYS

Dear Parents and Carers of the MESC community,

Welcome to this special edition of our newsletter that is adorned with pictures of the final Valedictory assembly and all the award winners on the afternoon.

My name is James Barut (pro:Barrett) and I am the Acting Principal here at our college.  My previous positions have been in Acting Principal roles, both at Emerald Secondary College and Heathmont College respectively. I am excited and humbled to be leading our school community…enough about me!

My first impressions were the warmth and friendliness of the relationships that the students had with their teachers after six years of secondary schooling.  For all our Year 12s and those Year 11s doing a Unit 3 and 4 subject, VCAA exams are on in earnest! Last minute revision, new batteries for CAS calculators, sharpened pencils and sharpened minds; it all equates to another learning experience for our students. English and EAL is scheduled for early next week and thus, our students prepare their own journey through their swot vac period.

Some of our students have returned to the College to find a quiet study space, whilst others have chosen to create a revision space at home. You, our parents and carers, have a role to play in this space, as you free your sons/daughters of any responsibility…for now!

For our students, the best study can be done in 40 minute chunks, have a break, then back into it. At the end of the day, it’s about revision, practice, revision, practice – don’t forget that your teachers are available to help you during this time.  For all our VCAL students, good luck in your chosen pathway, whether it’s in a workplace or further TAFE studies.

It would be remiss of me not thank all the staff for their efforts during this difficult year and indeed, to all the students and parents – 2020 has been a tough one and we all know why.

A massive thank you to staff members Penny Linardos, Sue Holderness and Aaron Prior for all their hard work in putting the assembly together, to our ICT guru Kevin Hunter for creating a live link for the entire school community, to all our presenters and all the office staff for preparing the awards – a real team effort!

To the class of 2020, be well, be healthy and perform at your best – think about these lines from one of my favourite poets, Robert Frost, who famously wrote:

‘Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference…’

We look forward to sharing your successes together.

 James Barut
