Open Girls' Cricket

In early November, ASC's Open Girls' Cricket team took on Oxley High School (Tamworth) as part of a state wide knockout competition. For many of the ASC girls this was the first time ever playing competitive cricket. The Oxley team was comprised of girls who had played together a number of times previously, allowing experience to prevail in the outcome of the match. However, ASC was far from disgraced,with Samantha Marshall grabbing a couple wickets and all members playing with fantastic spirit.

Thank you to the Oxley HS team for travelling up to play us, and for sharing some tips and skills. Women’s cricket is growing in popularity and with so many pathways available to further development the sky is the limit for our ASC girls.

Other cricket news:

  • under-14's boys: game scheduled against Guyra Central School;
  • open boys: bye in the first round, but game scheduled in the coming weeks.

Please see Mr Curry in the TAS Staffroom if you are interested in playing.

Rugby League is back at ASC!

Rugby League is alive and well at ASC, with our school being the only one in the North West Schools Sports Association to enter teams in all age groups at both of the gala days organised by the NRL in Inverell and Tamworth!

After a couple of weeks of preparation during lunchtime, we launched four teams (2x under- 16s boys and 2x under-14s boys) at the Inverell Gala Day. The occasion was used to test out new combinations and to give some of our students a taste of contact team sports for the very first time. The boys won more games than they lost --- and every single student was ready to play more!

The coaches decided to grade the teams for the next Gala Day at Tamworth, resulting in two under-14 teams and a single under-16s team.

The under-14s (2's) team played their hearts out all day. Although they saw little reward on the scoreboard, the boys noticeably improved as the day progressed.

Our under-14s (1's) team were the most impressive team at the competition. They remained undefeated throughout the day, including a four tries to nil victory over Farrer.

Our under-16s boys were very impressive and won all but one of the games they played. They they lost three tries to two against Farrer 1sts in an epic contest where the undeniable rugby league pedigree of the Farrer team saw them squeeze past our lads in the dying stages. Coach of the under-16s, Steven Ford, was overjoyed at the effort displayed by the team commenting: " I was so proud of our boys, only five of them had played Rugby League before Inverell the other day, and now we only go down by one try to Farrer? We have some raw talent here in Armidale!".

Well done to Steven, the other coaches Sam Brown, Tim Polson, Andrew Curry and Scott Howey. And well done to the boys of ASC.

Next Thursday, 26 November, the ASC under-13s, under-14s and under-16s teams are scheduled to take on O’Connor Catholic College in the annual Wellbeing Cup. We look forward to some great play and outstanding sportsmanship!
