VET (Victorian Educational Training)
The last week of Term 3 was the second Structured Work Placement (SWL) period for our VCAL VET students and they took the opportunity to experience a range of occupations. To the businesses that assisted us with this program, we say a huge “THANK YOU”; without your involvement, these invaluable experiences would not be possible. Should you be an entrepreneur who would like to avail your business to the program, please feel free to make contact through the school.
Here is what a few of our students had to say:
The SWL was great; I got better at the skills, I got better skills for my career in cooking and baking. Ivan T, Year 12, - Cindy’s Bakery, Tullamarine
I got to experience things that extended my knowledge in the field of VET Sport. I learnt how the domestic competition in basketball runs at Broadmeadows Stadium and this will help me when I work in the industry. Alex M, Year 12
It was a new experience to get to know a new workplace and how they operate a business. It was very valuable for me and my future. Jack S, Year 12, Open Circuit
I was thankful for the opportunity to work in an aged care centre, where I learnt that nursing was not as easy as it looks. Selina B, Year 11
I appreciated the opportunity to work at an Italian aged care facility and it helped that I was able to speak their language. I learnt various new skills to add to my current skill set. I also realised that I had to be very patient with older people so they could follow the activities. Anita M, Assisi Centre Aged Care, Rosanna
I learnt a lot about preparing the workplace safely through OH&S. Grace G, Year 11
I may be an art teacher down the track; I learnt how difficult it is to run an art class and how hard it is to control students. I enjoyed interacting with the other students and helping them develop their skills. Nathan L, Year 11, Our Lady’s Primary School, Craigieburn
I crawled under houses, crawled up in roofs and learnt aspects of being a domestic electrician. Emmanual R, Year 11, Electroconnect Electrical Services, Niddrie
I enjoyed experiencing SWL at a different place from my previous one. I learnt how to be more confident in making cakes, piping and putting designs on the cakes. Darius G, Year 11, Lamanna Direct, Essendon Fields
Because there are so many trades and students are not familiar with most of them, Kangan offers a free, annual event to introduce some of these trades to students. We took 44 Year 9 students to “Try-A-Trade Day” at Kangan TAFE in Broadmeadows at the beginning of Term 4. This may help them in choosing their career pathway and/or their subjects in Senior School. Below are a few photos of our students doing a little hands-on learning and having a thoroughly enjoyable day with a pizza lunch served afterwards.
