Hello from the DPS Specialist team!

Cultural Studies - Prep to Grade 3

Hi! I’m Lisa Foster and I teach Cultural Studies and Library. I am excited and ready to ‘travel the world’ with your child during Cultural Studies this year! I also cannot wait to introduce the students to the some 'movie magic' using our new Green Screen!

Prep students will be learning all about ‘What is Culture?’. We will discuss similarities and differences between cultures and investigate their own cultural backgrounds. Parents, if your child is not sure of their Cultural background it would be great to have a conversation with them about this to help them prepare!

Grade One and Two students will be learning about Asian Culture this term! We will be reading stories about China, Iran, India, Thailand and Indonesia. Students will also be encouraged to share their own cultural stories about these countries.

Grade Three students will also be learning about Asian Culture this term! They will get the opportunity to work in a group and choose an Asian Country to complete a project. They will research using books and the internet to find traditional foods, celebrations and languages.

Library - During the session your child will also borrow books from our amazing library! They will need a named library bag in order to borrow. Books are borrowed for two weeks but we encourage them to bring back finished books every week. Students are encouraged to borrow books that interest them but are not expected to be able to read them independently – use their library books as an opportunity to develop a love of reading together.

Borrowing Limits:

Prep - 1 book

Grade One - 2 books

Grade Two - 3 books

Grade Three - 4 books

Prep - Two can also borrow one bonus Non-Fiction book each week!

Visual Art - Prep to Grade 6

I am Christine Boskovska and this term I am looking forward to creating some AMAZING artwork with students.

Prep is learning how to create their own self-portrait of their first day of school.

Grade 1 and 2 are learning about turf houses, which are found in Iceland. We are illustrating our own house and using collaging to create texture for the fluffy clouds and crumpled grass.

Grade 3 and 4 are reading a story called “The Grumpy Monkey” and we are learning how to illustrate our monkey and create different types of facial expressions. We are using oil pastels and watercolour for our artwork.

Grade 5 are learning about Sulphur-crested cockatoo, which are a well-known Australian bird. They are learning how to illustrate their own cockatoo in their own style and using a technique called pointillism for the background to create movement of wind in the sky. Grade 6 are looking at the picture story book called “The House in the Night” to create our own ideas for illustrating. We are using black paper and using contrasting colours such as yellow and white to add emphasis to areas of my artwork that I want to stand out. We are also learning how to shade our artwork using hatching, cross-hatching and stippling on our illustration.

Physical Education - Prep to Grade 6

I am Martin Spinks and I teach P.E from Prep to Grade Six. It has been wonderful to see the students return so enthusiastically to P.E. this year. Students have been working on ‘getting to know you’ activities that promote positive interaction through teamwork. Students have been developing their ability to cooperate and communicate effectively in small groups.

This term the Prep – 2 students will focus on the fundamental motor skills of run, jump, skip, side step, gallop, and hop. Students will also be able to attempt the correct under arm rolling and underarm/overarm throwing techniques using a range of equipment.

Level 3-6 students are developing their team work with a focus on communication and cooperation for problem - solving and challenge - based activities. They will be participating in peer observation to analyse throwing, catching, skipping and kicking techniques to determine areas of proficiency and areas for improvement. During our unit on Fitness, students will be introduced to different fitness components including strength, agility, flexibility, coordination, power and cardiovascular fitness.

Level 4 students will begin Bike Education in Week 5 of Term 1.
