Junior School News
Welcome To Term 1 2023
Welcome back to all Junior School students and families!
We are looking forward to working closely with you all for a positive and rewarding year ahead. I would like to extend a special welcome to our Year 7 students and families. By all accounts our Year 7 students have made a positive start to the year. The Year 7 Level Up program, held on Monday 30 January, allowed students to settling into the routines of high school, learn about the opportunities at Frankston High School, and to get to know their peers and teachers. Our Year 8 students returned on Tuesday 31 January and have continued to demonstrate positive behaviours and a great attitude to learning after a very successful 2023.
Teachers can be contacted via Compass to discuss specific matters related to learning in that subject area.

IMPORTANT NOTICES AND REMINDERS
Wellbeing Supports
Frankston High School believes that students can only reach their full educational potential when they are happy, healthy, and safe, and when there is a positive School culture to engage and support them in their learning. Our school acknowledges that student wellbeing and student learning outcomes are inextricably linked. Year Level Leaders can refer students to the Wellbeing Team for support with parental consent. Please contact the Year Level Leaders or the Wellbeing Team if you have any questions or would like your child referred. Click here to view our Student Wellbeing Page.
Literacy Support
Over the coming weeks selected students in Years 7 and 8 will be removed from class for a short literacy test to help determine their suitability to be a part of our literacy support program at Frankston High School. Students will also be observed in class before being chosen.
This year we will be running Corrective Reading, a Tier 2 Literacy Intervention Program designed to promote reading accuracy. The program shows strong alignment with the five core components of literacy (phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency) and uses evidence-based instructional methods. Corrective Reading is used in many schools in Australia and has been implemented at Frankston High School in the past.
Parents/carers of students who will benefit from Corrective Reading will be contacted and further information about the program will be provided.
We are very excited to welcome students into our program and know they will benefit from the small group environment.
If you have any questions you can contact the Literacy Support Coordinator, Mrs Stephanie Heyes via email sheyes@fhs.vic.edu.au
Year 7 Immunisation
Frankston Council Immunisation Team are conducting their immunisation session at Frankston High School on Friday 10 March, free for Year 7 students. The two vaccines being administered are the:
- Human papillomavirus (HPV) - single dose*
- Diphtheria-tetanus-whooping cough (pertussis) - single dose
*Please be advised that the Human papillomavirus is no longer a double dose and this vaccine is now complete after the first session.
Parent/carers please see COMPASS newsfeed to provide consent. If you have any queries, please contact the Frankston High School General Office on 9783 7955 or Frankston Council Immunisation Team via email immunisation@frankston.vic.gov.au or by calling 9784 1930. More information and further immunisation dates please see School Notices.
Attendance
We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for one begin with students coming to school each day. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your teenager’s education.
Students develop good habits by going to school every day – habits necessary to succeed after school, whether in the workplace or in further study.
We have a minimum attendance expectation of 90% attendance for all students. We will acknowledge and celebrate students with 100% attendance at the end of each term by providing those students with a certificate and free lunch.
If your child is sick or absent from school, you are required to notify the school as soon as possible on the day of absence (or prior) using one of the following methods:
- Online (preferred option): Submit Absence Note via Compass. See this guide for instructions.
- Email: Send an email to attendance email address, attaching supporting documentation (if required):
- Telephone: Call the school on 9783 7955 and Press 1.
Notifying the school of your child's absence either prior to, or on the day they will be away, helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibilities.
Please note that you do not need to also call or email the school after loading your own approval, except in the case of the following circumstances:
- Extended holiday (more than three days).
- You need to let us know that you child was in attendance after receiving a non-attendance email or text.
