Junior School Report

Welcome back

The Junior School team welcomes all our staff, students and parents for a new school year at Scoresby Secondary College. We hope that you all had a safe and restful Christmas break after what was a challenging and unprecedented year in 2020.

In particular, we welcome the newest members of our community – our year 7 cohort. They began Term 1 on Thursday 28 February, and have adjusted well to the rigour and expectations of secondary school. It has been fantastic to see students begin to develop new friendships, and become engaged in all of the learning opportunities offered here at Scoresby.

To support our students in their transition to a new school year, we encourage students and parents to contact their child’s home group teacher for any initial concerns or questions they may have.

Year 7 home group teachers are:

7A: Ms Ellen Sawyer  &  Ms Emma Rooke

7B: Mr Sam Eddy

The Year 8 home group teachers include:

8A: Ms Sylvia Wood

8B: Mr Donovan Lawrence

The year 9 home group teachers include:

9A: Ms Su-Nhi Kim

9B: Mr Patrick Dempsey

Merit Chart

This year the Junior School is continuing the Merit Chart initiative for years 7- 9 students. This initiative involves the students being acknowledged and rewarded for making a positive contribution to their learning and the community.  Each term will have a different focus. Term 1 will focus on the correct use of the College planner. It is expected that students record their classes for each day and any homework / assignments they receive and their due date. Planners are expected to be signed by parents / guardians at the end of each week. The planners will then be checked on Monday mornings in home group.

Maximising your learning

The start of the year is a prime opportunity to develop good habits both at home and school to support your child to achieve their best. Here are some tips to consider which can be implemented at home:

  • Assist your child in setting up a homework timetable.
  • Create a study space at home – This could be a common area where it allows students to both be independent but also ensures that you are involved in their learning and can offer assistance when required.
  • Reinforce a ‘growth mindset’ attitude at home – This could include encouraging them to use phrases such as, “I can learn from my mistakes.”

To assist students with maximising their learning, homework club will resume after year 7 camp this year taking place every Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm – 4pm in the library. This is a fantastic support service where students can receive individual help from a supervising teacher.

Key dates:

  • Year 7 Information Night: Tuesday 16 February
  • Year 9 KIOSC visit: Wednesday 17 February
  • College Photo Day: Thursday 18 February
  • Year 7 Camp: Wednesday 24 February – Friday 26 February
  • College Athletics Day: Tuesday 2 March
