LIBRARY NEWS

And That's a Wrap!

It’s hard to believe but welcome to the final library newsletter for 2020. Even though this year has been different to ‘normal’, it’s still gone quickly and we’ve enjoyed many special memories.

Our school participated in the National Simultaneous Reading Time in May, where schools across Australia read ‘Whitney & Britney Chicken Divas’ by Lucinda Gifford.  While many dates for regular days were changed, we were still able to celebrate events such as International Women’s Day, Refugee Week, Naidoc Week, Sorry Day, Roald Dahl Day, the Premier’s Reading Challenge and culminated with Book Week and the Book Fair early in Term 4.

A highlight for me though was the generosity of staff and students who participated in 'Readings from the Red Chair' for Book Week. It was very special to have so many people share their favourite stories; thank you! If you would like to enjoy these again, visit our school Youtube channel here.

If you’re interested in seeing some of the fun times we’ve had in the library this year, watch the video ‘HTS Loves to Read’.

Thank You to our Families

I would like to thank families for their ongoing support with providing library bags and returning books to the library, I really appreciate your help. Nearly all books have been returned this term which has made our annual stocktake a much smoother process. I would also like to thank families who have donated books to the library and purchased books through the Scholastic Book Club & Book Fair; these resources are invaluable to us all.

Premier’s Reading Challenge Certificates

What a year for reading at our school! Aside from the RED program, we had 132 students complete the reading challenge; our highest number ever! The special PRC awards arrived at school yesterday and these will be given out at this week’s assemblies. Participation certificates will also  be distributed to classes this week. Congratulations to all participants and families for their support.

A Year in Numbers

I thought I would gather some interesting statistics about what happens in the library over the year.

Total number of loans - 21,663 books (an increase of 2,783 from last year - WOW!)

The Top 5 Classes Who Borrow - 1/2M, 1/2S, 1/2D, 1/2W, 3/4W (Congratulations Stage 1!)

The top 3 borrowers (HTS Super Readers!)

Primary - Hannah B (second year running!), James Wilmans, Layla Mair

Most Popular Genre - Humorous stories

Most Borrowed Month - June, 2883 books

The Most Borrowed Books for 2020 was dominated by one author (again), Aaron Blabey, but our third most popular book was released in 1956 proving that it’s still as popular today as it was then. The top 10 books borrowed in 2020 are:

  1. Dog Man 1
  2. Pig the Pug
  3. Harry the Dirty Dog
  4. Pig the Star
  5. The Bad Guys 5: Intergalactic Gas
  6. Dog Man 7: For Whom the Ball Rolls
  7. Pig the Winner
  8. Weirdo 13: WeirDomania
  9. Pig the Tourist
  10. The Bad Guys 10: The Baddest Day Ever

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and peaceful New Year.  See you in 2021!
