From the Head of Sport

As the term comes to a close I would like to thank all the staff and parents who have supported both our winter sports and and our Carnivals this term. Without the expertise of each of you we would not be able to run such a successful sporting program.

At BMGS we have a number of students who compete outside our pathway sports. Whilst I try and acknowledge all of these, this can only be done when information is passed on. Please let me know if you have done something great in your sport so that you can be acknowledged.

Please remember that winter sport will recommence on the first Saturday after we return to school (23rd July). This means that all training sessions will also be on during that week.

Have a safe holiday and remember to keep moving!

Congratulations

Netball

Last week we had a number of students attend the ISA Netball trials. Congratulations to Olivia Harris (Year 11) who was selected in the Open ISA team and Jessica Harris (Year 8) who was selected in the U16 ISA team. We wish both girls the best of luck at the NSWCIS Championships.

Orienteering

Orienteering NSW has just announced the 2022 NSW Schools Orienteering Team which will compete at the 2022 Australian Schools Orienteering Championships to be held in Victoria from September 26-28.

Congratulations to Olivia Freeman (Year 12) who has been selected in the Senior Boys' team and Alton Freeman (Year 7) who has been selected in the Junior Boys' team. Congratulations Oliver and Alton and all the best in your upcoming competition.

Hockey

The U15 State Championships were held last weekend and from this tournament Hockey NSW has selected twenty boys for the Accelerated athletes program. In exciting news, James Reynolds (Year 9) has been selected to be part of this squad. This means that James is now classified as one of the top 50-60 boys - from all ages below 18 years - in NSW. As part of this selection, James will be required to attend a number of camps over the next three years where he will be able to both improve his skills and showcase his gameplay. This is an outstanding opportunity for James and an excellent result, considering James is only 15 years of age.

Match Reports - Saturday, 18th June

Football (Boys)

BMGS 13s defeated Chevalier College, 7-1

The 13s had their first home game of the season this weekend against Chevalier, and put on a magnificent show,  putting the ball in the net seven times conceding only once in response. Those on the sidelines particularly enjoyed the displays of individual skill and short passing interchange staged by those in attack, with Alton scoring a hat-trick, and Aiden and Henry both contributing two goals each. Man of the match was Xavier in central defence, who did an excellent job sweeping up any attacks that were too close to our goal.

Sam Colbourn, Coach

BMGS 15s were defeated St Stanislaus, 3-2

The BMGS Under 15’s came into their fourth game of the season looking to secure their first win. They were down by quite a few players and hampered by injuries; with no subs and a player from the opposing team filling in, they still took to the field, hopeful of getting a result against St Stanislaus. As the first half started the boys struggled at first to get onto the ball and retain possession, with Jed being forced into making a few good stops as goalkeeper.  Nevertheless, the boys kept hassling the opposition and chasing the ball, with Nick and Will being especially effective at pressing the players for the ball. After a few attempts on goal by Xavier and Max, the Under 15s finally got the breakthrough as Xavier threaded the ball into the path of Finn, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net from what seemed to be a mile out. However, we just couldn’t hold on, and even closer to half time after a mix-up in the back, the ball was bundled into the net and we entered the half at 1-1. Surprisingly the boys still had plenty of energy going into the second half and after a couple of position changes the boys started the second half looking much the better side. The boys looked a lot more confident going into the second half and generated a lot more chances. This is also due to the rock-solid defence of Henry, Jed, James and especially Charlie, who took on players twice his size and won the ball almost every time. They were also supported by Otto, who had a fantastic game in midfield, barely letting anyone get past without putting a foot in to win the ball. The second half drew on and a draw looked the ever likely result when a slice of luck fell the way of Xavier, who pickpocketed the defender to slot the ball in the back of the net putting Grammar 2-1 up. With just 15 minutes left, all the boys had to do was hang on; a couple of near misses from max went agonisingly close and some heroics from the now goalkeeper Nick kept Grammar in the lead. However, with five minutes left in the match, a ball deflected to the back post and Stanislaus grabbed the equaliser. Another missed change from us and a last attack from Stanislaus, they took the win 3-2. Despite the loss the boys should hold their heads high; they played with passion and determination and this was easily their best game of the season.  Man of the Match was Charlie Monks.  Honourable Mentions: Otto Umbers, Xavier Stephens, Finn Brinkman and Max Klein.
