Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Over the past week, it was great to see so many boys out trialling for our Term 3 team sports of Tennis, Basketball and Rugby League. All information pertaining to these Term 3 sports can be found on the College App. 

 

Our Track and Field season commenced last Friday with the House Athletics Carnival which was a great day of house competition, games and competitive track and field. Training has commenced this week for our tilt at the AIC championships on Monday and Wednesday afternoon and boys are encouraged to get down and be a part of it.

Training will continue into the holidays:

  1. Sprints / Jumps / Middle Distance / Hurdles (9:00-11:00am) – Monday 27-6, 4/7 All meet at McMahon oval for a group warm-up (several Jumps/sprints/middle distance coaches attending for groups)
  2. Throws Training (11:30am-1:30pm) – Wednesday 22/6, 29/6, 6/7 All meet at Hayden Oval (Des Davis)
  3. Sprints/Throws/Hurdles(3:15pm-4:30pm) - Sunday – Available 26/6, 3/7, 10/6 Hayden Oval

The outstanding events from the carnival have been carried over and will be run in the first week back. 

Term 2 Sports Dinner

Last week concluded our Term 2 sports, as a result, our first teams gathered for a sports dinner at the Qld Cricketers Club and the following awards were presented.

Derek Cameron Medal - Open Cross-Country Champion – Zach Newsham

Most Consistent Trainer Award Medal – Sasha Sofronoff

 

Open Chess:

Marcus Porter Memorial Shield – Ben Mead

Spirt of Chess – Jaspar Driml

 

We were privileged to have Mr Matt McKay as our special guest. Matt told us stories from his playing career as captain of Brisbane Roar when they won the A-League in 2011 and over 60 caps for the Socceroos, as well as playing football professionally in Europe. Matt had some key messages for the boys on working hard, setting high goals and striving to achieve. 

Term 3 Sports Uniforms

Term 3 sports uniforms are available for purchase from the uniform shop. Jerseys for rugby league are provided by the College, but shorts and socks are required to be purchased.

Cross Country

Congratulations again for Zack Newsham who placed 2nd in the Australian Mountain Running Championships held at Mount Tennent, Canberra - ACT on Monday 13 June. (in -2 degrees temps). He finished in a time of 26.19 – 3km up a mountain and then 3km back down. This result will put Zack in a good position to get selected to represent Australia at the World Mountain Running Championships held in Chiang Mai – Thailand later in the year.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Student Achievements

Year 7 Boys Sammy Plumb (Rush) and Quinn Lovering (Foley) participated in the National Little League Baseball Championships last week in Sydney, representing Brisbane Metro as one of two Queensland teams who earned a spot at the tournament. Both Sammy and Quinn played their hearts out with Brisbane Metro finishing 8th in the Nation after dropping a very close game to Western Australia in the quarter-finals.
