Year 9
It was fun to write and speak about a topic as if I was an MP in parliament, while also learning how to improve my public speaking. I spoke about my topic because it is one that is affecting our youth, and needs to be addressed and changed for the future.

The Parliament Prize is a competition open to all Victorian school students from Grade 5 to Year 12. Entries are divided into three categories - Grades 5 &6, Years 7 to 9, and Years 10 to 12.
Amelia triumphed in the Years 7 to 9 category, earning a prize of $500 and a commemorative trophy. Additionally, her efforts have won an award of $1000 for Brunswick Secondary College, which will be used to promote civics and citizenship, and law-related education within the school.
Entering the competition, students are invited to record a 90 second piece to camera - just as if they were making a Member's Statement to the Parliament. They can speak on any issue that they consider to be of importance to their community, electorate, state or the nation.
Each entry was judged on its own merit. Judges looked for entries that demonstrated a clearly articulated message, interesting insights, ideas and/or perspectives and a clear understanding of why the issue or idea is important to the "MP" and their "constituents". Finalists were selected by three separate panels, one for each age category. These panels included Members of Parliament, Parliament staff and representatives from Parliament’s Education Advisory Panel. With such rigour in the judging process, Amelia's achievement is all the more impressive!
On behalf of the school community, we extend our congratulations to Amelia. Her excellent effort has been well rewarded with the Parliament Prize!
