LEARNING MATTERS

In 2014, the fortnightly newsletter will regularly feature articles about some of the interesting, innovative and unique learning that is taking place in our classrooms. This is an opportunity for faculties to provide the local community with a snapshot of the educational opportunities experienced by students at McKinnon Secondary College.
YEAR 9 BYTES – PROJECT ESMART
During their introduction to the BYTES program, Year 9 students have started 2014 by exploring the complex, yet essential topic of cyber safety. The rapid pace of technological change has enhanced our world in many ways, in particular our ability to communicate and access information; students, however, need to ensure they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to understand the possible consequences of their online behaviours.
This mini-module commenced with an entertaining and informative presentation by Mr. Dan Carroll, who discussed various cyber risks, digital reputations and the importance of being ‘Esmart’ when using online technologies. Students were then required to break up into small groups and create a short film about a particular issue linked to cyber safety, including online gaming, grooming, sexting, cyber bullying and chatrooms. These awareness campaigns had to highlight the dangers of the topic, but also provide solutions or advice on how to combat such problems.
Project Esmart is not only an engaging way of learning about this important issue, but helps students develop their skills in teamwork, communication and effective use of ICT.
