HATS AND SUNSCREEN

To protect against the sun’s rays, bucket hats are available at the uniform shop as an alternative to the cap and the cost of these is $13.  We encourage all our students to wear a school hat if they are in the sun at recess or lunchtime.  We have adequate shade available but many will choose to walk around or play sport.  All students are aware that they MUST wear a hat during PE and sport lessons.  We also recommend that they bring from home sunscreen and apply it during the summer months. 

At McKinnon we aim to encourage our students to be SunSmart and reduce their risk of skin cancer later in life.  We know that a healthy balance of exposure to the sun’s UV rays is important for everyone.  Too much sun can cause sunburn and damage to the skin, whereas too little can lead to low Vitamin D levels which is required for healthy bones, muscles and general good health.

HOMESTAY REQUIRED FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

At McKinnon we have a number of international students studying for their VCE. Many of these students are in homestay living with a local family who have children attending McKinnon.

VICTORIAN SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES

The Victorian School of Languages has a centre at McKinnon Secondary College.  This means that students have the opportunity to study Hebrew, Russian or Korean after school on a Thursday from 4.30 to 7.30pm.  Students can study at their own level, anywhere from absolute beginner to year 12 level.  For more information, please visit the VSL_McKinnon Centre website at vsl.mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au or see Ms Hatch (office in the B-block corridor).

Parents should always make contact with the General Office first when visiting the school or trying to make contact with their children.

Appointments with teachers must be made via telephone or email them directly.

Student absences should be reported to the school before 9:00am.  Please email the Attendance Officer Alison Pollock (alisonp@mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au) or telephone 8520 9050 on the day of the absence by 9:00am.  A note on the day of return to the General Office is required for absences where no parent contact has been possible.  Proformas for absence explanations can be downloaded from our website (www.mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au).

LOST PROPERTY

Please ensure all school clothes, books and personal property are clearly labelled with the student’s name.  Many items are not returned to their rightful owners because they are not labelled correctly or clearly.

USBs should include a folder with the student’s name and form to assist in returning it to the correct person.  If you have lost anything see Mrs Plate in the Sick Bay during recess, lunch or end of day.

2014 EDUCATION MAINTENANCE ALLOWANCE (EMA)

Education Maintenance Allowance forms for 2014 are now available from the College.  EMA is provided by the Victorian Government to lower-income families to help with education-related costs.  If you have a child under 16, and you hold a valid Health Care Card, Pension Card, or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible to receive the EMA.

The closing date for EMA applications is 28 February 2014 and must be strictly adhered to.
