Year 8 Girls Cricket Southern Zone Finals

On Wednesday the 24th of October, the Year 8 Girls cricket team ventured to Dendy Park with their fill in coach Ms Daly, brimming with confidence.

The format was ‘Blast’ and after bowling too many no balls in the first game against Dromana, we lost by 3 runs.  The team re-grouped with some clever batting and field placements to comfortably beat Dandenong, Alkira and Koo Wee Rup before meeting the undefeated Cheltenham in the final game.  The girls saved their best for the last game and defeated Cheltenham with ease. Rhys McKenna was outstanding in all facets of the game and was ably supported by big hitting from Kasey Smith and Gopi Jagadeesh Babu who bowled the last over of each game with skill and composure. It was a great day with all teams playing within the spirit of cricket and we look forward to the state finals in November.

Year 7 Science Excursion to Edithvale - Seaford Wetlands and Treatment Plant

Our Year 7 students visited the Edithvale-Seaford wetlands to learn about the history of the Carrum Carrum swamp and the importance of maintaining the small areas that remain. This wetland area is an important habitat for many animals but also for migratory birds that fly from as far away as Siberia. The wetlands also acts as a sponge during large rain events and so protects surrounding areas from flooding.

Students observed birds in the wetlands and were shown a model that demonstrated where litter ends up if left on the street.

Our next stop was the Eastern Treatment plant where students were amazed not only by the smell (!) but also that the plant takes only 24 hours to convert the waste water into clear recycled water. Many processes had been studied in class earlier in the year when students study separation techniques.

Year 8 excursion to Point Nepean National Park

Year 8 students have had a very busy term 4.  On the 12th October we embarked on a fantastic day trip to Point Nepean National Park. We were very lucky to find ourselves adventuring out of the school on a day of brilliant sunshine.  After an hour long bus journey down the peninsula to the park, we headed off on our long trek from the Diggers Cottage down to the Fort. Despite the warmth and hard climb along the path our students surged ahead with few complaints. We were able to enjoy a lovely lunchtime taking in the views across Port Phillip Bay to Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale. It is important that we enjoy and value the beauty of the natural environment in our wonderful country. For the students, this was a terrific opportunity to visit the landscape described in their novel ‘Falling from Grace’.

Year 7 Coin Challenge

On Friday 26th of October all of Year 7 participated in the annual coin challenge. The Year 7’s were raising money for the Monash Children’s Hospital. All year 7 classes placed their money across two basketball courts to see who had the longest and most valuable line. 7E won the competition with over 100 meters of silver coins, a new record in length and they had the most valuable line as well, in second place was 7H with 30 meters of silver coins and in third place was 7D with 27.5 meters of silver coins. Over all it was a great effort by all year 7 classes raising a large amount of money for the for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

7E to Seaford Wetlands

On the 26th of October, 7E went on an excursion to the Seaford wetlands which is just next door to the school. They started at Kananook Creek and made progression to the wetlands. At the creek the students met a man named Paul Davies, who is the president of the Kananook Creek Association; he explained to the whole class about the history of the creek and any other enquiries that the students had. The students made good use of the excursion at the creek and the wetlands by picking up rubbish wherever they could reach and see. The following photo explains how much rubbish was picked up in a short 20-minute walk along the wetlands track.

Year 7 Silk Worms

Year 7's are studying Classification and for the topic of Invertebrates we have been watching the Silk Worms progress from egg to ant and then caterpillar. The final stages we will share with you next newsletter.

Year 8 Spelling Bee

On Tuesday 30th October year 8’s came together in the Performing Arts Centre for our annual Spelling Bee.  This year’s competition was particularly tough with many students struggling over the spelling of words such as ‘disastrous’ and ‘contagious’.  A hard fault battle between two students ended with Stephanie Valdecantos of 8B taking out the honour of being awarded the 2018 Spelling Bee Champion much to the joy of her classmates (who will now receive a pizza lunch for her efforts).

Celebrating Excellence

We congratulate Year 8 student, Mitchell Rosicka on being awarded the Australian Scout Medallion.  This is a significant and highly respected achievement and we wish him well with his future endeavors in the Scouting movement. There is no doubt Mitch demonstrates qualities that will help him fulfill his personal potential in life.

From Mitch:

The Australian Scout Medallion has taken me 3 years to earn. To achieve this award I have been required to develop my skills in leadership, organisation, communication, planning, inspiring others, completing tasks, problem solving and the facilitation of a team. These skills have all been demonstrated through the achievement of my Cert 2 in First aid, LSV Surf Rescue Certificate, Planning and undertaking a 2 night 30km hike and leading a Patrol (team) on many camps. I have also developed adventurous activity skills in Canoeing (Flat & White water), Kayaking, Abseiling, Rock Climbing and had a huge amount fun along the way.
