Principal's Message

Welcome back everyone to Term 3.

Even though I enjoyed a later start then everyone else it has been great to catch up with staff, students and parents.

After a month away, l was genuinely excited to get back to work and especially to see our students.

During my many breakfasts and lunches, I met up with some old teacher friends. When teachers get together they love to talk about their schools, mostly positive sometimes negative.

One of the discussions was about how entitled and rude their students are at their school. They spoke about how unmotivated they are in learning and how they basically ignore you in the yard.

All I could think of was how lucky we are at SMDP. Not only do our students actually like us, they want to be around us. They are well mannered, engaged and proud to belong to this school.

This connection with our students doesn’t just happen.

It is through everyone’s hard work to build relationships, trust and empathy. Schools are about partnerships with staff, students and their families.

It is taking the time to get to know each other, especially our students. Our staff understand how important it is to build relationships with their students.

To laugh with them, show their vulnerabilities and get to know each student as a person.  It’s also about engaging our students through an exciting curriculum and giving them voice.

There is a true sense of wanting to belong to something special. We have that at SMDP.

So when I told them over breakfast that I was actually excited about getting back to school to see the students, I actually think they thought I was mad. All I could think of was how lucky we are.

Look forward to working with everyone this term.

God bless.
