Abbey Caldwell at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with her family

Abbey Caldwell wins Bronze!

As announced on our College Facebook page earlier this month, DSC alumni and 2019 school captain - Abbey Caldwell - was selected to represent Australia in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England in the Women's 1500m athletics.

At the 2022 Nationals, Abbey Caldwell, was for many a surprise winner of the national 1500m title ahead of Olympians Linden Hall and Georgia Griffith. But for keen observers of the sport, it was her projectory in the sport as devised by her coach Gavin Burren. Abbey described it as “a linear progression of performance since a young junior, which has allowed me to tap into new capabilities each year.

In the early hours of Monday 8th August, Australia switched on to watch Abbey run the race of her life and achieve 3rd place in the Womens 1500m Final at the Commonwealth Games. Watch Channel 7's coverage of her final sprint home here.

What makes Abbey’s Commonwealth Bronze Medal even more special is her outstanding mental approach to the Birmingham Games.  Abbey is the current National 1500m champion and having run the qualifying time for the World Athletic Championships in Oregon, Abbey was preparing herself to compete for Australia in the World Champs.  However, she was not selected.  Such a selection decision could have thrown Abbey into turmoil.  But full credit to Abbey; having then been selected for the Commonwealth Games team Abbey and her coach, Gavin Burren, switched her mind and prepared for Birmingham, which must have been a tough process.  (source: Doncaster Athletics Club)

We reached out to Abbey shortly after her race in the Commonwealth Games to congratulate her on her incredible achievement. Abbey was able to enjoy a day of relaxation before heading off to her next International race meet. We look forward to sharing our interview with Abbey Caldwell to the DSC community in the coming weeks.

Abbey's interest in athletics began in her early high school years when she joined Doncaster Athletics Club. She graduated from Doncaster Secondary College in 2019 having successfully completed VCE and then being offered a placement in Deakin University's Bachelor of Health Science course.
