Parents survival guide – some handy hints to enjoy the WMM

Community Events Team

In 2015 my then 4-year-old repeatedly disappeared during the market, his older brother had been at the school for 2 and a half years so he like many younger siblings was very confident within the grounds. The options were to be continually stressed about where he was, or to simply embrace his sense of independence, knowing he would turn up when hungry. I do however realise not all parents feel comfortable with those options so here are some handy hints if this is your first WMM.

  1. Bring lots of cash (some small change), we will have EFTPOS and card facilities but cash helps us get started.
  2. Get them to wear gumboots or shoes they can easily get on/off themselves in between the inflatable rides on the oval.
  3. Pack multiple pairs of socks, and bring extra pants for your kids with zippered pockets, or a vest with zippered pockets
  4. Give your kids small amounts of cash so they check in with you repeatedly (when they want more $$)
  5. Write your mobile number down on the kids activities wrist band with sharpie. If they can't find you, the MC in the undercover area or someone at a stall can text you to let you know they are safe but looking for you.
  6. Put your name down for a shift and then tell your kids where you are doing a shift, then they can come check in……….. and hassle you for $$
  7. There will be a designated signposted meeting point, when you get to school show the kids where it is.
  8. you’ve got a kiddo who likes a bit of quiet, the bookstall will have quiet spaces to chill out and pick up a good book!
  9. Bring a drink bottle. There will not be soft drink or cordial available/for sale. Homemade lemonade will be sold otherwise it's water from the bubbler taps.
  10. Book in for the child minding so you can enjoy your 4 -7pm or 5-8pm shift knowing they are warm and dry
  11. Enjoy the huge range of food on offer.
  12. It may be cold or even a little wet but a mulled wine and the fire will make everything better.
