Year 8 Maths Projects

YEAR 8 MATHS PROJECTS

At the end of last term, the Year 8 students were working hard at using their understanding of Coordinate Geometry and Linear Equations in real life situations.

Students worked through a series of problems, which allowed them to use their knowledge learned in class.  Some of the tasks included comparing part time jobs to help find the best rates through creating equations and tables, and graphing.  Students then compared different plans for movie passes and mobile phones, including estimating and calculating costs and data used, creating their own plans and conditions.  A number of students also took the opportunity to extend themselves by completing an open-ended task which allowed them to research and present their own knowledge and findings on use of Coordinate Geometry in other aspects of life.  Some of the examples are included below, with students creating PowerPoints, posters, and oral presentations. Many of our students are going well above the Year 8 level to show what they have learned!

All our Year 7, 8 and 9 Maths projects have the option for students to investigate further to research, create or present their additional knowledge from a number of different topics.  Keep an eye out this semester for the next challenge in each of those year levels!

Please contact Ms Hutchinson for any further information, questions or concerns.

MATHS ONLINE

A friendly reminder that all of our Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 students have access to Maths Online accounts to support them with their learning and development in Maths.  Many classes use the Maths Online accounts to supplement work done in class; to help assess for both formative and summative assessments; to set, mark and collect homework; and to help give students additional ways to support their learning.

Maths Online links directly to the Australian Curriculum and can be accessed in class, at home, and in Homework Centre using school laptops for those who have trouble accessing the internet at home.  Maths Online has additional videos, worksheets and notes pages to help our students, tasks can be completed multiple times to help with reinforcement, and students can work at a level that suits them (whether that be above, below or at the standard level).

Parents and families are encouraged to contact their child’s Maths teacher if they would like more information about how Maths Online is used within their classroom, or if they would like more information about how they can use it to support their child at home.  Ms Hutchinson can also be contacted for any questions or further information.

AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION

A number of students have already signed up for the Australian Mathematics Competition running in Week 2 of this term.  Students compete against other students around Australia and have been emailed information about the competition, practice questions, links to past tests, etc.

Unfortunately most Year 9 and 10 students will miss out due to being on camp (being a national competition there is little we can do about changing times) however we will run a session on Friday 5th August (after school) for any Year 9 and 10s who would like to compete.  Students should email Ms Hutchinson to book their place in the competition.
