Tournament of Minds

This Sunday, 21st August, 7 students will be representing St Raphael's at the Metro North Tournament of Minds competition. The students competing this year are: Odessa D'Lasselle, Luca Carbone, Leah Gozzo, Marcus Christensen, Sabine Villella, Lola Puszkar and Anika Midgley.

WHAT IS TOM?

Tournament of Minds (TOM) is a problem- solving program for multi-aged teams of students who work together to solve a demanding, open-ended Long-Term Challenge. The team must also participate in an unseen Spontaneous Challenge® on Tournament Day. The program has Primary and Secondary divisions.

Tournament of Minds’ aim is to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment.

Our objectives are:

  • To promote the stimulation of real, open-ended challenges
  • To develop creative problem-solving approaches and techniques
  • To foster cooperative learning and teamwork
  • To promote knowledge and appreciation of self and others
  • To encourage experimentation and risk-taking
  • To expand and reward creative and divergent thinking
  • To stimulate a spirit of inquiry and a love of learning
  • To develop enterprise
  • To celebrate excellence

The team has chosen The Arts as their medium this year. Here is a short summary of the challenge. The students have 6 weeks work on the challenge before they present to a panel of judges from other schools.

Who Are You?

INTRODUCTION

A mystery person has been delivered to the police station. This person has no memory of who they are or where they have come from and is unable to speak. The person’s arms are elaborately painted using body paint, they are wearing an interesting piece of jewellery and are dressed in a fabric that appears to be representative of a culture.

CHALLENGE

Your team will use the clues (body painting, jewellery, clothing) to identify who this person is, where they have come from and the secret message that is hidden within their adornments.

This research should help you discover the significance of these art forms in the recording of information.

You will need to research the arts of body painting and jewellery making, as well as the cultural significance of fabric in cultural clothing design.

We wish the team lots of luck on Sunday!!!!
